Personal Engineering Activities(PEA):

A.
I researched various technical papers and prototype developed & adopted for
easy transfer of patients in hospitals.I discovered importance of a machine/ mobile in
transfer of patients in hospitals. I studied and surveyed in local hospitals about the
problems faced in transferring of patients from one ward or departments to another
departments. I found that majority of health personnel are facing body ache and back
pain injuries due to stresses created in body. Moreover, various accidents has occurred
during transfer of patients from one floor to next floor. I focused my study and
research to design and fabricate a model ( a bed mover electrically operated with
battery ) which is compact in design and economical. I studied to create a CAD
model in solid Edge software.

B.
I decided to move ahead for selection of material to choose hollow Square
metal rod of 25mm*25mm*2mm as frame/ chassis of the model. I selected 12V
lead-acid battery a primary component of model which is maintenance free and has
low self discharge , Capacity of 12V 7Ah and long service life. I studied and decided
to use Reversible Right Angled DC gear motor having advantage of high precision,
Maintenance free, low noise and designed to handle high shock loads etc. Which is
operated on worm gear arrangement ( worm gearing uses right angled drive coupled
to output shaft). I also decided to select 2 nylon castor wheels for rear support and
stability of vehicle and a Rubber Tyre of Dia-260mm & thickness-80mm for stronger
grip purpose on inclined surfaces. I decided to use a 3P SPDT toggle switch
consisting of forward, reverse and Stop control functions. I used a clampers situated
in front of the model to hold or secure the bed tightly together to prevent movement or
separation through the application of inward pressure.

C.
I began to create a CAD model of a Frame( mild steel) in Solid Edge by
opening a new window. I selected ISO metric part and name the part. Then, I selected
the front plane to create the frame design and select the line tool. I created a frame
structure in 2D sketch with assigned dimensions. Then, I used the extrude tool to
create a 3D sketch of the frame up to fixed thickness. I used the fillet tool to give
roundness to the corner points of model.I created a rubber Tyre of dia-260 mm and
thickness-80 mm with a circle tool and extruded to specified thickness, saved and
named as part 2. Then, I chosed a new part tab, named part 3 to create a Reverse Dc
gear ( Worm gear) Motor. I used several commands like circle, revolve extrusion,
fillet/ chamfer, rectangle, line and reference plane to create gear Motor.Similarly, I
used similar tools for creating castor wheels and clampers. After creating all
components , I then assembled all those parts in assembly part of Solid Edge. I
assembled every parts to a single model with assemble tools like flashfit, Axial
Align, insert, Mate, planer align ,Connect etc. And drafted a 2D design for fabrication
process.
D.
After Creating the Cad model , I started the fabrication process of the model. I
collected the hollow Square metal rod of 25mm*25mm*2mm and started to mark the
dimensions ready to cut the metal piece to required dimensions as 2D draft cad
model.
I used Saw electric mini cut off machine to cut the metal piece and plywood cutting
machine to cut the plywood. I used vernier height gauge for marking purpose and
Center drilling machine for drilling a hole in the marked position on metal rod. I
welded the metal rod to create a frame with the help of Shielded Metal arc Welding.
The actual fabricated model is specified as length-790mm, Breadth-455mm and
height- 920mm from ground level. Then, I assembled the components like Gear
motor, wheels , Castor wheels , Plywood compartment to secure battery and medical
supplies, toggle 3P SPDT switch etc. After full assembly of fabricated model, I started
to paint the metal parts with corrosion resistant coating paint which prevent the parts
from rust. I painted the plywood part and wheels to provide attractive appearance to a
model.

E.
After fabrication, I tested the model in local hospitals and concluded that it
can become efficient application on hospitals to transfer patient from ward to ward
without using much effort from health personnel. In local hospitals , the bed mover
concept has not been implemented, thus nurse who worked in that particular sector
suffer same problem mentioned above. So, I constructed this simple fabricated model
in lowest possible costs so that every hospitals can afford. With frequent survey, trail
and practical method this model concept can be upgraded to compact designs and
health safety standards & can be advantageous in Hospitals .
