 What they do in preventing disease and prolonging life?

“Prevent disease, prolong life, and promote health” – is Barangay Dahican’s

longstanding mission to its populace. Activities to strengthen public health capacities and
service aim to provide conditions under which people can maintain to be healthy, improve their
health and wellbeing, or prevent the deterioration of their health. Along their endeavors to
prevent the occurrence of various types of public health diseases in the barangay; they serve
the community by providing an array of essential services such as:

 Inform and empower people about health issues by spearheading symposiums,

seminars and social gatherings to merely educate the public.
 Monitoring health status every now and then to identify community health
problems.
 Mobilize community partnerships to identify and solve health problems.
 Develop policies and plans that support individual and community health efforts.
By this, they enforce laws and regulations that protect health and ensure safety.
 Link people to needed personal health services and assure the provision of
health care when otherwise unavailable.
 Evaluate effectiveness, accessibility, and quality of personal and population-
based health services.

Say for example, in Dengue – we know that Barangay Dahican is one the top barangay
along the city who suffers from this disease. Indeed, dengue cases continued to rise despite the
various prevention and control strategies conducted by the Center for Health Development to
halt the spread of the disease in the barangay.

In 2017, a series of vector surveillance trainings and larval surveillance activities were
done. Otherwise known as “Barangay to Barangay Puksain: Public Enemy no. 1 DENGUE”. These
activities and other prevention and control initiatives were given.

Orientation on new barangay officials/key leaders on dengue prevention and control

took place as well as training of rural sanitary inspectors on dengue vector surveillance.
Orientation on vector surveillance activity for BHWs and rural health midwives were done.
Likewise, residential monitoring at a basis of BHWs was facilitated checking the surroundings
itself and even the water resources storage where mosquitoes could live and propagate. Given
the above-mentioned efforts to prevent the further spread of the disease, a sharp decline of
number of cases and fatality rates is thus expected.

Further, solid waste management should be of great priority also as the group
interviewed the secretary and health in charge of the barangay. As such several activities were
conducted by the barangay whom was collaborated with LGUs and the DENR to fully implement
the solid waste management law. These consist of:

Information, education and communication campaign. Conduct practice on

proper disposal method of solid wastes; and result of assessment of potential
sites for solid waste management facilities to further increase awareness on the
implementation of the solid waste management law.
 Technical assistance in the conversion of open dump sites into controlled
dumpsites and establishment of materials recovery facilities or MRFs
 As we know this is a developing barangay where some tourist destinations are
situated, they are on their way on practicing “NO TO USE OF PLASTICS” as to
environment and eco-friendly place who foresees sustainable development.
These imply that more efforts are needed for waste minimization and proper
treatment and disposal of the huge amount of daily wastes in areas of Barangay
Dahican.
 Put recommendations based on your findings (What we should do?)

Despite all the efforts, government collaborations, number of different symposia,

forums and activities conducted in educating the public, public health diseases still exist. Thus,
we believe that everything must start in square one. Everything must start in scratch. We
believe that if we transcend boundaries to reach out first the basic unit of the society which is
the family, this paradigm will be solution to the problem will no longer be in a far reach. Home
is where discipline and honing starts. So, it’s better to first start up molding and upholding the
family first by educating them thoroughly so that it will reflect on them when they comes out in
the community and discipline would be practice in all aspects of their well-being most
especially in keeping their wastes properly and organized most of the times as we know that it
is a prime factor where contaminants, infectious disease carriers like flies can propagate that
may result to illnesses when not given attention and with execution.

Furthermore, say for water quality, with the high prevalence of water-borne diseases
and parasitism cited as one of the public disease, it is imperative that more safe water facilities
and sanitary toilets to be constructed and that the monitoring of environmental health
promotion activities must be intensified. We would also recommend that research studies must
be done also to assess the physical, microbiological and chemical quality of water in high risk
areas so to prevent water related health issues because water is of prodigious necessity to
human life.
