Introduction
These release notes contain information about the Firmware Update Utility (FUU) Version 4.2.
You can retrieve the current firmware versions for the panel or loop interface module using the
FUU.
The FUU runs on a desktop or laptop computer and uses a TCP/IP or COM port connection to
connect to the control panel.

Overview
What’s new in this release
FUU V4.2 includes changes that prevent upgrading and downgrading of panels with firmware
version 2.x to 4.x and 4.x to 2.x respectively using the FUU.

Firmware update
The Firmware Update Utility (FUU) is used to update your panel with new firmware. It also allows
you to update the loop interface module on panel firmware versions 4.0 and newer.

Retrieving firmware versions

The FUU lets you retrieve the current panel or loop interface module firmware version using the
“Retrieve Current Firmware Version” button on the FUU tool. For detailed information on how to
use the FUU tool, refer to the FUU Help.

Operating system compatibility

The FUU V4.2 was tested and found compatible with the following Microsoft Windows operating
systems: Windows 10 Professional, Windows 8.1 Professional, and Windows 7 Professional.
Refer to “Known issues” on page 4 for an important note concerning Windows operating systems.

Hardware requirements
To use the FUU, you must have a desktop or laptop PC that includes the following hardware:
• 1024 x 768 or higher monitor and small fonts
• 10/100 network interface and Cat 5 cable (if panel includes an SA-ETH card)
• A COM port connection (if panel includes an SA-232 card)
• Mouse or other compatible pointing device (recommended)

Firmware versions and compatibility

FUU version 4.2 can download 64-point and 500-point panel images running panel firmware
versions 2.20 to 2.31. The LIM (Loop Interface Module) firmware is not upgradable on panel
firmware versions 2.20 to 2.31.
FUU version 4.2 can download 64-point and 1000-point panel images and LIM (Loop Interface
Module) images running panel firmware versions 4.0, 4.01, 4.10, 4.11, 4.2 and LIM version 1.0
and newer.

Installation and upgrade notes

Note: The FUU must be “run as administrator” and requires full elevated rights and privileges.
We recommend that you do not manually delete your previous version of the
FUU. Instead, let the installation program update that version to the current version.
The FUU functions best on a computer with a resolution of 1024 x 768 or higher and small fonts. If
any other settings are used, some of the FUU dialog boxes will be resized and may not display
correctly.

To install the FUU:

1. Double-click the FUU_Setup.exe file.
2. Follow the prompts to finish installing.
Notes
• The firmware update files required to update the panel and loop interface modules are:
Panel image module:
Image.bin (for panel versions 4.11 or lower)
ImageMicrocode.bin (for panel versions 4.2 or higher)
Loop Interface Module:
dlim.bin (for DLIM versions 1.00, 1.01, and 1.11)
• Updating the firmware may result in the loss of the panel's configuration data. You must back
up the panel’s database in the CU by performing a “Read from panel” before the panel
firmware is updated. Make sure that the same database is restored from the CU by performing
a “Write to panel” in the CU after the firmware update is completed.

• Before using this utility to update your firmware, be sure that the panel's configuration utility
(CU) is not communicating with the panel via RS-232 or TCP/IP. If the CU is connected and is
downloading information to the panel, wait for the download to complete, and then end
communications with the CU. Once you disconnect the CU, you can use the FUU to update
the panel with new firmware.
• When using the serial communication method, be sure to set RS232 CU Enable in the panel to
ON before and OFF after initiating the download. If the system should timeout before the
download starts, you must reset this option to OFF, and then back to ON.
• Serial communication requires that you use an SA-232. The SA-232 card only communicates
with ports COM1 through COM8. Make sure that your computer COM port is set to one of
these ports. Ensure the same COM port is selected in the FUU tool.
• Ensure the firmware version before and after the firmware update by clicking the Retrieve
Current Firmware Version button of the FUU tool.

FUU Help
FUU Help requires that you have Internet Explorer 6.0 or later installed. The compiled HTML help
file is not compatible with other web browsers.

Known issues
Running the FUU on Windows 7 operating systems
Some features in the FUU require the program to be run with higher privileges in Windows 7
execution level scheme. However, running at the higher privilege level results in the following
screen being displayed.

Figure 1: Windows User Account Control dialog box (typical)

This is displayed because the FUU is not currently certified with electronic signature verification
software. This issue will be remedied in a future release. In the meantime, select the Allow option
and your FUU will run with full functionality.
