and Tolerancing
Reading
Read Chapter 1 of the GD&T: Application and Interpretation textbook prior to completing the Review Exercises.
Objectives
A combination of activities is required to achieve the following objectives. Completing the reading assignment
and the following review exercises is an important part of achieving the objectives. Familiarization with the
objectives prior to completion of the reading assignment and review exercises will make mastery of the objec-
tives easier. After completing the reading assignment and completing the review exercises, you will be able to:
→ Explain the importance of specifying dimensions and tolerances in compliance with applicable standards.
→ Recall the history and development of dimensioning and tolerancing methods.
→ Explain how teamwork can result in better definition of the dimensions and tolerances in the design
process.
→ Recall the job titles of those who can assist on the design process team.
→ Recall the dimensioning and tolerancing skills needed for success in design- or production-related
occupations.
→ Identify and explain the types of documentation included in a product definition data set.
→ Understand the relationship between 2D orthographic views and how they are created using orthographic
projection.
→ Explain some possible industrial changes and the impacts of these changes on dimensioning and
tolerancing.
Review Exercises
Place your answers in the spaces provided. Show all calculations for problems that require mathematical
solutions.

True/False
____________________________ 11. True or False? The current standard specifies that all measurements must be
in inches.
____________________________ 12. True or False? Designers should work independently to achieve an optimum
design.
____________________________ 13. True or False? Disagreement about product requirements can occur when
nonstandard dimensioning methods are used.
____________________________ 14. True or False? Interpretation of dimensions and tolerances is the ability to
understand product requirements from what is shown when the product
definition data complies with the applicable standards.
____________________________ 15. True or False? Supplemental geometry is all the defining geometry of the part
itself.
____________________________ 17. True or False? When the unit value for all dimensions is inches, the inch
symbol (″) or abbreviation IN must be applied to all values less than one inch.
____________________________ 18. A(n) _____ is an ancient unit of measurement based on the length of a
person’s forearm.
____________________________ 19. _____ may be used to establish or show relationships between features in
adjacent orthographic views.
