Product analysis: analysing different aspects of products such as function, materials,
manufacturing processes, style etc to find out its good and bad points. Hard work already
done as product developed and materials, components etc already specified, designers
can improve on what is already there without having to start from scratch; existing market
already established; more cost effective; make less mistakes.

Examiner reports

Q2.
(a)    Harry Beck is well known.

(b)     Many answers were very vague here. Many candidates didn’t describe the graphical
differences very clearly.

(c)     Candidates gave vague answers to this question, with many only achieving a single
mark. Answers were often poorly constructed. There were too many generic terms.

Q3.
Whilst there were some very good responses to this question, many candidates were
unable to give a fully reasoned response for each of the design requirements. A significant
number of candidates produced a material specification rather than a design requirement.

Q4.
A well answered question over all, many candidates knew how to evaluate the given
products and marks were fully differentiated according to the level of response.
Candidates that scored well were able to expand their answer to fully describe the benefit
to the user to score full marks.

Q5.
Well answered with the majority of candidates giving sensible advantages of looking at
existing products such as product improvement and marketing issues.

Q6.

The more able candidates scored full marks on this question – they made appropriate
statements and provided relevant examples which highlighted their understanding of
market forces. Less able candidates made an appropriate statement, if somewhat
superficial and gave an appropriate but unqualified example. Overall, most students were
able to understand technology push rather than market pull although those candidates
who gave both were more able to access the higher marks.

Q7.
(a)     Well answered with many candidates giving three technical or design features.
Popular correct responses were bag less, clear dust container and easy to store.

(b)     Many candidates could give a reasonable response which was linked to their
answer to part (a).

Q8.
Not well answered. Very simple responses such as ‘a successful company’ or ‘other
companies could copy the Dyson’ were popular. Very few candidates included the
innovative use of materials, processes, technology or design in their answers.
