Examiner reports

Q1.
The increase in demand on this question inevitably meant that candidates found it harder
to gain full marks. Many candidates gained marks by producing three relevant
specification points. Fewer candidates went on to fully expand their answers by providing
two suitable explanations. The overall performance was slightly worse than in previous
years. Candidates are reminded not to use the given example as one of their answers.

Q2.
This question was well answered. Many candidates gained full marks by producing three
relevant specification points. They invariably went on to expand their answers to provide
suitable explanations. The overall performance was slightly better than in previous years.

Q3.
The majority of candidates identified at least two ergonomic features of the wind up torch.
More able candidates gave three out of the four ergonomic features required and went on
to provide detailed explanations. Incorrect responses listed features of the torch which are
not ergonomic, for example ‘it doesn’t need batteries’.

Q4.
A small number of candidates were able to demonstrate knowledge of the importance of
anthropometric data. Many candidates simply gave more details of the ergonomic features
of the torch.

Q5.
(a)      Many candidates correctly identified a specific use for the wind up torch. Camping
was the most popular correct response. Most candidates went on to provide one or
two reasons why the wind up torch was suitable for this use. The fact that it did not
need batteries was often given as a correct answer.

(b)     A small number of candidates stated a specific use for the gas light, often confused
with a camping stove. Candidates who did identify a correct use for gas light
generally went on to give two correct reasons.

Q6.
Candidates gained some marks for giving details of the sort of information you would need
to research but few gained full marks by suggesting what type of research should be
carried out.

Q7.
This question was well answered. Many candidates gained full marks by producing three
relevant specification points for a range of casing designs for an mp3 player docking
station which are suitable for the teenage market. They invariably went on to expand their
answers to provide suitable explanations.

Candidates lost marks by repeating answers or by repeating information that was given in
the design brief.

Q8.
This question was well answered. Many candidates gained full marks by producing three
relevant specification points for a child’s educational toy that improves hand-eye co-
ordination, and subsequently expanding their answers to provide suitable explanations.
Candidates lost marks by repeating answers or by repeating information that was given in
the design brief.

Q9.
This section of the question was well answered. Many candidates correctly identified four
ergonomic features of the buggy. Reference to the ‘handle’, ‘the wheels’ and the ‘seat’
were among the most common correct responses. Many went on to provide correct details
of their chosen ergonomic feature.

Q10.
The Health & Safety requirements were well answered.

Q11.
The beginning section of this question was well answered. Many candidates gained full
marks by producing three relevant specification points for the interior light of a car. They
invariably went on to expand their answers to provide suitable explanations.

There was a variety of responses seen to the logic gate question, with few candidates
scoring full marks.

Q12.
Candidates are familiar with the table format and this question was well answered by
those who referred to the fabric rather than the style of seat.

Q13.
The majority of answers focussed on the comfort and protection provided by the cushion
inserts.

Q14.
It is very pleasing to see that candidates were able to identify the correct fabric
construction method and give reasons for its use. A few candidates wrote ‘knitting weave’
or similar and were not awarded marks as answer was incorrect and confusion was
evident.

Q15.
Candidates found this question easy and gained full marks. It was noted that many
candidates spelt Velcro incorrectly as ‘velcrow’. The buckle was the fastening that caused
most difficulty.

Q16.
Most of the candidates gained both marks with a variety of correct responses the most
common of which concerned questionnaires and researching online websites.

Q17.
(a) and (b)

Most candidates thought the construction was either knitted or woven although
many students did not circle any diagram and over looked (a) altogether.

(c)    The main disadvantages described by candidates concerned wool being too hot,
itching and shrinking when washed. Candidates showed good understanding of the
properties and characteristics of wool.

(d)    Knowledgeable candidates were able to state acrylic but many candidates gave
cotton as the answer; most could not give a synthetic fibre. This was a harder
question.

Q18.
Many scored full marks as they had identified the necessary fabric specification points for
cricket trousers and gave a wide range of correct answers. Some candidates confused the
question with trouser style features and lost marks.

Q19.
(a)    This question was quite well answered with the most popular answers referring to
lightweight, comfortable, and loose fit clothing rather than talking about the specific
items shown in the photograph. Answers were not always linked to the surgeon’s job
or the items of clothing so some candidates missed the opportunity to gain full
marks.

(b)     Higher ability candidates were able to identify the properties of polyester and cotton
and explain the reasons for the suitability of this blend for the clothing. This question
showed good differentiation between candidates.

Q20.
(a) and (b)

Candidates found the questions hard but of those who circled the correct answer, many
were able to gain at least 1 mark when explaining the reason for the circled temperature.
The most common answer referred to removal of bacteria, stains etc. or, if they gave 30
degrees as the wash temperature, referred to eco-friendly reasons.

Q21.
(a)     Many candidates found this a challenging question and some gave a wide variety of
incorrect answers.

(b)     Many candidates gave correct responses, mostly referring to advantages of not

needing to wash the clothing, being biodegradable, hygienic and inexpensive.

Q22.
Just over half of the candidates were aware of the correct method of production. Many
candidates circled mass production which was incorrect.

Q23.

On the whole this question was well answered with a variety of correct points. Some
candidates gave 3 similar answers concerning care instructions and only gained 1 mark
for all 3 answers.

Q24.
Candidates studied the two photographs with care and gave very good answers, many
gaining the full 6 marks.

Q25.
(a)     Answered well on the whole with many candidates achieving 3 marks; to gain 4
marks it was necessary to consider the function of the stage costume as well as
what it should look like.

(b) and (c)

Were easy questions and most candidates gave confident answers, most popular
responses were zips and Velcro.

Q26.
Most candidates were able to answer this question in full. Most of the candidates gained
both marks with a variety of correct responses.

Q27.
(a)      Candidates generally showed good subject knowledge in their responses, but some
candidates failed to gain marks because simple one word answers were insufficient.

(b)     This question was about how computer technology and communication are used to
present research findings. Candidates who read the question carefully were able to
give a variety of different examples such as use of PowerPoint presentations,
charts, graphs and videos.

Q28.
(a)      This was a more challenging question. The highest marks were gained by
candidates who showed a clear understanding of the advantages of using
computers and made reference to cost savings, speed of communication and
environmental issues.

(b)     Most candidates understood that more red garments would be ordered and so were
awarded 1 mark. Some candidates also suggested the development of new styles in
red and gained the 2 marks.

Q29.
(a)      Most candidates were able to suggest appropriate improvements to the harness
including moving the leash ring from the front, making the harness adjustable in size
and adding reflective fabric to the design. Some candidates repeated the example
provided and so gained no marks.

(b)     Most candidates gave at least one test such as trying the harness on a dog.

Q30.
(a)    (i)      The majority of candidates were able to correctly identify the elements of police
uniform, the reflective tape and fluorescent fabric most often correctly labelled.

(ii)     Advantages were listed correctly by many candidates although some merely

restated the fabric description rather than pointing out the advantage of, for
example, non-iron fabric.

(b)     Some candidates repeated a fabric from the police uniform and so no marks were
given, but many were able to give an example such as Kevlar, Fastskin or Gore-tex.

Q31.
Some candidates gave a fibre rather than a fabric and so no marks were given. However
marks were awarded to the linked answer for part (b) when the correct properties were
given for the named fibre, if related to the toy. Popular responses were soft, washable and
strong.

Q32.
Candidates who responded with information that was relevant to the context of the baby
vest label gained more marks for this section. Some candidates gave repeat information
only about washing instructions, listing three different aspects of product care and gained
one mark overall.

Q33.
These linked questions proved to be difficult for many candidates to answer. There was
confusion about the term ‘fabric construction’ with some candidates referring to
manufacturing systems rather than methods of making a fabric such as knitting and
weaving.

Q34.
Many candidates were able to give points for the specific fabric specification successfully.
A common error was to state that the fabric should be very absorbent rather than to
indicate that the fabric should wick moisture away from the body.

Some candidates were able to give clear and detailed information about cotton fibres and
relate their answer to the clothing for the athlete.

Q35.
(a)      Popular answers referred to the thickness of the fabric and the fur that insulates
against cold. Many candidates recognised that most of the body was covered by the
clothing, in particular by the hood.

(b)     Candidates who wrote in detail gained the highest marks. Most candidates were
able to easily identify inspiration to be gained from examining the clothing in the
photo.
