Workplace Communication
Meeting Skills Assessment (40%)
_____________________________________________________________________
Background:

You are a member of the TP Student Development Committee, responsible for providing
students with a well-rounded educational experience.

The committee is in the process of creating a poly-wide multi-sport event for all TP students. The
aim is to encourage as many TP students as possible to participate in at least one of the physical
fitness activities. The TP Multi-Sport event 2020 should provide opportunities for students at all
skill and fitness levels. [A separate group of specialists is working with students with disabilities
to identify ways to include them in the event/activities.]

As a member of this committee, you are expected to consider the points in the table below and
contribute your opinions and feasible ideas in each of the areas to be discussed at this meeting.

No Area for Discussion Proposed Ideas

1 Selection of 3rd Team Sport
 The committee has agreed to include soccer
and basketball competitions in the event, as
these are among the most popular team sports.
 The committee wants to have 3 team sports, so
one more team sport is needed. (not Captain’s
Ball)

Propose at least 2 suitable team sports, discuss

their pros and cons, then decide which sport
would be the best choice.

Should the 3 sports have separate boys’ and

girls’ teams, or would mixed gender teams be
better?

Justify your decision.

2 Possible World Record Bid

 TP holds the world record for the Most Number
of People Eating Lollipops Together, and wants
to set a new world record (for something
different) in 2020.
 Someone has suggested that the multi-sports
event could be a good opportunity to set a world
record for something.

Discuss 2-3 examples of possible records that

could be attempted, and the likely pros and
cons. Decide which record to attempt.

Should the record attempt be held during the

multi-sport event? Discuss the pros and cons of
doing so.

Justify your decision.

3 Team Costume for Fun Relay Race

 A 100-metre costumed relay race for teams of 4
has been included in the event to encourage
less athletic students to take part and help
create a fun atmosphere at the event.
 The committee needs to choose a costume that
they can all dress up in and take a photo for the
publicity posters to advertise the event. It should
ideally be something creative/fun.
 The rules state that costumes must be suitable
for running a distance of 25 metres without
endangering the safety of the wearer (e.g. not
too hot, awkward to wear, or heavy).

Identify the 2 most suitable costumes. Justify

your decision.

4 Encouraging Maximum Participation

 An important objective of the event is to get as
many students to participate as possible
 To ensure a high level of student participation,
the committee could:

a) make the event compulsory for all students

b) ask each diploma to ensure that at least
50% of their students take part
c) make it optional, offer prizes for the ‘fun’
races/activities and hope students find the
event attractive

Discuss the pros and cons of all 3 options and

decide which option is likely to be the most
successful. Justify your decision.

5 Catered Food/Goody Bags

 Since a large number of students are expected
to participate in the event, TP has agreed to
provide funding for:
o Option A – Catered food (afternoon tea)
o Option B – Goody bags (with drinks &
snacks)

Discuss the pros and cons of the 2 options and

decide which would be the most suitable for the
event. You may wish to consider logistics, wastage,
environmental concerns and/or fun/attractiveness.
Justify your decision.
