PREPOSITIONS OF PLACE

The following chart shows some examples of how to use the prepositions of place:

IN AT ON
the factory the bus stop holiday
Toronto lunch a business trip
China a conference the beach
Venezuela head office Main Street
the office home the corner

IN: We live in Venezuela.

AT: See you at home.

ON: I am on the beach.

Prepositions of place | part 2”, we can imagine the use of each preposition like:

PREPOSITIONS OF PLACE

AT describes a specific place or event:

• I am sitting at the table. (a place).


• There’s somebody at the door. (a place).
• I am at the school (a place in town).
• I am at the movie theater (a place in town).
• They are at a conference. (an event).
• I’m at a concert. (an event).
• She is at a meeting. (an event).

PREPOSITIONS OF PLACE

ON describes:

• A place on a surface like a street or a road.


Mary lives on Main Street (we don’t know which part of Main Street)
• Levels in a building like:
I live on the first floor, 2nd floor, 3rd floor…etc.
• Cost lines:
My house is on the west coast.
The hotel is on the east coast.
The park is on the beach.

IN describes:

• A place within a larger space with walls or borders on a map:


I live in Queens.
I live in New York.
• A place like a city:
I live in San Cristóbal.
I live in Caracas.
I live in Moscow.
• A place like a country or continent:
I live in Venezuela.
Sarah lives in India.
They live in Europe.
