Ice Making

A. Illustration Scheme

B. Theory

1. The term 1 ton ice plant refers to the capacity of the plant of 1 ton of ice per day
and not 1 ton of refrigeration.

2. To compute for the refrigeration capacity (heat load) in tons of refrigeration

QI = mw Cpw (tw – 0) + mw (335) + mice CpI (0 – tice)

QI = mw Cpw (tw – 32) + mw (144) + mice CpI (32 – tice)

Where:

Cpw = 1.0 Btu/lbm-°F = 4.187 KJ/kg-°C

CpI = 0.5 Btu/lbm-°F = 2.093

Fusion ice = 144 Btu/lbm = 335 KJ/kg

tw = temperature of raw water

tice = temperature of ice

Illustration
Assumption: @20% radiation and insulation losses
Heat to be removed:

Eng’g:
QI = mw [(1.0) (tw –32) + 144 + 0.5 (32 – tice)]
S.I:
QI = mw [(4.187) (tw – 0) + 335 + 2.093 (0 – tice)]
To produce 1 TON of Ice per day:

QI = (tw – 32) + (144) + 0.5 (32 – tice)]

T’R = 1.2 [ (tw – 32) + (144) + 0.5 (32 – tice)]

Where:
20% losses = Assumption
T ice = tons of ice

C. Empirical Formula

1. To find the freezing time

f.t. = = ___ hrs.

Where:
t = ice thickness, in
t b = brine/ice temperature, F
2. To find the no. of cans

N=

Where:

W = total mass of ice, lbs

C = mass of ice to be produced per can, lb
