END SEMESTER EXAMINATION: FEBRUARY - 2021

CEE201 STRENGTH OF MATERIALS
[ET]
Time: 2 ½ Hrs. Max Marks: 70
Note: Attempt questions from all sections as directed. Use of Scientific Calculator is allowed.
Section: A- Attempt all questions. Each question caries 14 marks. [42 Marks]

Q1) (a) A rectangular beam 400mm deep is simply supported over a span of 5 meters. Determine the
Uniformly distributed load per meters which the beam may carry, if the bending stress should
not exceed 110 N/mm2 .Take I=7x106 mm4?
(b) A simply supported beam is subjected to pure bending justify the empirical relation for
deformation with support condition and assumptions.
Q2) (a) A steel bar 8 m long is 28 mm diameter for 2 m of the length, 25 mm diameter for 4 m and 32 mm
diameter for the remaining length. It is subjected to an axial pull of 50 kN. If the modulus of elasticity
of the material of the bar is 2 × 105 N/mm2, calculate the change in length of the bar.
(b) Compare and contrast types of beam with respect to support conditions.
Q3) (a) A member formed by connecting a steel bar 50cm to an Aluminum bar of 60cm is having a
Square cross section of 4cm and 5 cm respectively.. Calculate the magnitude of force P that
will cause the total length of the member to decrease 0.10mm. The values of elastic modulus for
steel and aluminum are 210 kN/mm2 and 70 kN/mm2 respectively.
(b) A rectangular bar of cross sectional area of 1200mm2 is subjected to a tensile load P along the
Horizontal axis. The permissible normal and shear stress on the oblique plane BC (Inclined at 450
to Horizontal) is given as 7N/mm2 and 3.5N/mm2 respectively. Determine the safe load P.
Section: B- Attempt all questions. Each question caries 14 marks. [28 Marks]

Q4) (a) Analyse the beam for the following system of forces. Sketch SF and BM diagram justifying

deflection shape.
