Mobile Phones

In Britain, 50% of the people have a mobile phone. Eight million of them are teenagers. This
number still grows.
Teenagers use their mobile phone to call and to send text messages. Especially sending text
messages is very popular. It is cheaper and more private than making a phone call.
It is important to make text messages short. Here are some examples:

ruok? = Are you OK?

pls = please
2day = today
2moro = tomorrow
thx = thanks
pcm = please call me
ilu = I love you
cu = see you
hand = have a nice day
b4n = bye for now

Most of the parents or teachers don’t understand this language. Adults think this language is a
code only teenagers understand. For young people it is cool their parents don’t understand the messages.
At school there can be problems with ringing phones and students sending text messages during classes.
Most schools have a rule that students must turn off their mobile phones in the classroom. They can only
use their phones during the break, at lunch time or when the school is finished.
