Create a Public Service
Public Service Announcement (PSA) is a type of advertisement designed to
educate and inform a particular target audience about an important social issue. It
is not designed to sell a product, but rather to spread awareness. For your CPT, you will
participate in an awareness campaign for one of these important movements - Black Lives
Matter or Indigenous Peoples Movement. You will reflect upon the Virtues of Empathy
and Conscience as members of our Catholic school community.

Our PSA’s will be in support of one or all of the following

documents/ causes:
I. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action (2015)

II. The United Nations Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous People (2006)

III. Black Lives Matter International Activist Movement (2013)

IV. Ontario Catholic School Graduation Expectations (2015)

Assume that one of these agencies has hired you to create a Public Service Announcement
intended for an audience of high school students and teachers. You will create an ad on one
of the topics below. On presentation day, our class will vote on the most compelling PSA’s on
each topic. You will be sharing your PSA’s with the class in a brief presentation.

PSA’s will incorporate words and images from Indian Horse or

Your
The Hate U Give to illustrate the message
Find speci c quotations and descriptions from the novel to bring these policy statements to
life. Each PSA must have 3-4 direct quotations from the novel. Brief quotations (i.e. part of a
sentence) are most effective. Do not quote entire paragraphs! Include only the most powerful
words. Cite your work on the nal slide rather than in the body of the PSA.

Storyboard & Script

A storyboard is a planning tool used for a frame-by-frame plan of your media product.
In the box, create a simple sketch of the image you plan to use. On the lines below, write
the words you plan to say while this image shows. Aim for telling your story in 10-12
slides.

Before you begin, plan out these important considerations:

Topic:

Purpose:

Audience:

Related scenes

Indian Horse:
(quotations,
scenes, pages)

PSA Structure
1. engage audience attention to topic

2. present a problem and a position on the issue,

3. examples to support it,

4. a call to action to encourage viewers to change their attitude and behavior

Think about how you can structure your 10-12 frames to develop your topic using this
structure.
