INFORMATION
Global Warming: When looking at global warming we see that it is
long-term heating of the earth from human activities.
How is global warming related to forests: The way forests are directly
related to global warming because forests affect the amount of carbon
dioxide in the atmosphere. As forests are increasing this is removing
carbon from the atmosphere and the wood, leaves, and soils is absorbing it.
Since forests take and store carbon over a lengthy period of time, they are
considered “carbon stinks”. All this carbon ends up stored in the forest
ecosystem. When these forests are burned the carbon can be released into
the atmosphere.

HOW IS IT CAUSED
Global warming will occur because the amount of carbon dioxide and other pollution that
are in the atmosphere, will collect and absorb sunlight and solar radiation that have come off
of the earth's surface. There is the greenhouse effect which is heat radiating towards space
from earth. The greenhouse effect is consumed by gases like water vapor, CO2 (Carbon
dioxide), Methane, Nitrous oxide, and CFCs (Chlorofluorocarbons). These gases trap heat
by atoms that are attached together loosely just enough to vibrate when they are absorbing
heat. These molecules that have vibrated will eventually release radiation, which will then
absorb the next greenhouse gas molecule. Through this the earth's surface is compacted with
heat. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change group, they have
concluded that more than 95% of human activities over the past 50 years have warmed our
planet. It has been stated by them that modern civilization has raised atmospheric CO2 from
280 parts per million to 414 parts per million in the last 150 years. Not only they concluded
these facts but also that 95% of human produced greenhouse gases are a huge part in the
earth's increase in temperature over the past 50 years, these gases consume of CO2, metham,
and nitrous oxide.

CASE STUDY
How is your environmental issue related to global warming?

Deforestation is connected to global warming because it prevents

the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere from decreasing and leads
to opportunities for more CO2 in the air.

Forests are responsible for the annual intake of 16% of atmospheric CO2 emitted from fossil fuels in the USA.
Disturbances in forests caused by human activities such as urbanization greatly affect the improved impacts
resulting in the abilities of forests to decrease the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere. Deforestation, a main aspect
of urbanization, is the removal of forests to make room for cities or facilities. One of the many ways deforestation
occurs is by trees being chopped down and burned, which releases CO2 in the atmosphere. 8-10% of CO2 Levels
emitted annually by humans are as a result of deforestation. The amount of CO2 levels increasing as a result of
deforestation contributes to the buildup of CO2 in the atmosphere, which is the driving force of global warming.
If deforestation continues to occur at high rates, storing carbon in forests can become ineffective at combating
climate change because the amount of atmospheric CO2 would be too much to absorb and cause the carbon
storages to become unstable. This is of course, only one of the many ways deforestation leads to the opposite
effect of helping the environment through decreasing CO2 levels. The ash left behind in the soil ruins it since
instead of nutrients returning back from the tree’s, ashes are returning. Without nutrients in the soil, it is
extremely difficult to plant new trees that can assist with intaking carbon.
STOICHIOMETRYRY
(78+60+82+52) / 4 = 69.25 TONNES OF AVERAGE CO2 EMITTED PER
HOUSEHOLD OF TEAM
69.25 TON CO2 / 1 X 907185 / 1 GRAM = 6282 GRAMS (ROUNDED USING
SF RULES)
2C8H18 + 25O2 → 16 CO2 + 18H2O
C: 8X2=16 C: 8X2=16
H: 18 H: 2X9=18
O: 2X 25/2=25 O:2X8=16 16+9=25
2C8H18 IS OCTANE
C: 8(12.01) + H: 18(1.008)= 114.232 G/MOL OF OCTANE
2 MOL C8H18 / 1 X 114.232 GRAMS PER MOL / 1
= 228.464 GRAMS OF OCTANE COMBUSTED IN ORANGE COUNTY
2611.14 GRAMS = 1 GAL OCTANE
228.464 / 2611.14 = 0.0874959 GALLONS OF GASOLINE PRODUCED.

HUMAN IMPACT
Introduction:
We all know that the good air quality has been
rapidly decreasing and more CO2 has been released
into the atmosphere as more trees are cut down
and more factories are used to burn fossil fuels.
How can we prevent this increase in CO2 in the
atmosphere?

Plan Summary
An action plan that our group came up with is to make
our own volunteer groups to recycle. We will use the profit
we earn from recycling so we can get money to plant trees.
This will help our environment because trees absorb the
excess CO2 in our atmosphere. We will also benefit from
recycling because there will be fewer carbon emissions
when we recycle trash because the trash won’t be
incinerated. We believe our project will impact the
environment for the better.

To start our project we will need to organize a

volunteer recycling group. We can advertise around
the school for people to join. Once or twice a week the
recycling group can meet at a local park with parent
supervision.
ABOUT
THE
AUTHORS
NIKKI DOUGLASS
Hi! I am Nikole Douglass or also known as Nikki.
I have a HUGE love for softball and dogs.
Most of my weekends are dedicated to playing.
I can be seen as an environmental steward as
I recycle and I rarely use bottled water,
I use my hydro. In order to reduce my carbon
footprint I will try to reduce how much I drive
instead i'll carpool or take public transportation.

NATALIE OSUNA
Hello :) I enjoy playing soccer, dancing, going to church, hanging
out with friends and family. I am an environmental steward through
my participation in girl scout events that focus on the environment
like beach cleanups. Two small things I will do to reduce
my carbon footprint are to start putting my desktops
on hibernate during the night and reduce my waste by transitioning
to using only cloth napkins. Hibernating my computers
would help the environment by saving electricity which
requires the use of power plants that burn fossil fuels.
If i use only cloth napkins instead of throwing away paper
napkins I would be helping reduce the amount of waste
that is burned every year, which releases CO2.

GENESIS CASTILLO

Hi !!! I am Genesis Castillo and I

enjoy reading, playing volleyball,
and being outdoors. Things I do
that make me an environmental
steward is when
I go for bike rides, and recycle.
Two things that I will do in order
to change my carbon footprint for
the better is by using
lightbulbs that decrease the
energy use.
I can also start growing my own
food.
