Argumentative Essay:

3. First impressions are nearly always wrong.’ Do you think this is true? Give reasons and
examples to support your view.

We all know the renowned phrase ‘Don’t judge a book by its cover.’ A first impression can say many
things about a person. However, a first impression does not always say everything about a person.
It may no reveal many things about the person itself but it does show an image of the person on
the surface.
It is a common tendency amongst humans to interpret a person entirely upon first impression.
However, a person’s characteristics cannot be always determined by looking at them. Often people
judge other by their appearance and the type of clothes they wear. Most of the time people often
come to conclusions without judging any other factors such as education, intellectual and financial
background. Just seeing a teen with tattoos should not give the impression of him an ill-mannered
teenager.

Some tend to get a first impression through conversation. Judging the person’s words as they
speak does not always give a proper impression of how he is. For example, the same person who
just spoke with you formally might speak informally with a friend across a street. This should not
arise doubts about the person’s behavior.

Despite all these facts which may or may not be true about an individual, I argue that in order to
have a fair perception about a person, one must take time to get to know the persons character
and their reason for doing one thing over the other rather than just judging them based on their first
impression. The way someone presents himself doesn’t always suit his personality and show who
they are.
Unfortunately, in today’s world one’s presentation is the first thing that others see and the thing that
people are judged on. The person might be in a bad mood, angry or may be shy. For instance, if
somebody had a fight with her husband before an encounter with somebody, the person might not
be in his best of mood or he might not be himself. As a result of this, it will be unfair to judge the
person based on first impression. Even though first impression is sometimes important in our day
to day lives but in my opinion, first impression is usually wrong and is often the worst means of
judging a person because it’s not until you get to really know a person
