Although we boast an enviable history of heavy metal mania, the UK has been
slacking in paying its respect to the old masters, leaving the Greeks and the Germans
to carry the torch through long-running, must-visit fests like Keep It True and Up The
Hammers. But through events like Live Evil in London and now Brofest in Newcastle,

weekender in March this year, Brofest will return to Northumbria University in February,
2014 and organiser Stu Bartlett gives us a run-down on why we should all be planning
to make the trip.
“Although stressful, Brofest worked really well,” he says with a massive smile.
“Leading up to the event we had a good feeling;; we got the numbers, we had the
support from the fans, the venue fell over themselves to help us, we had massive
support from Gary Avenger – his crew made the festival run as well as it did – Neil
from Spartan Warrior, Bob from Deep Machine and Paul from Salem got the name
out to various radio stations and pushed the event. We could all tell something was
happening. We heard the obligatory negative comments about how something like
Brofest couldn’t work in the UK, but we showed them it could.”

found the country, its culture and its people to be
absolutely fascinating... but like when visiting most
Asian countries, you are usually stuck in touristy circles
– visiting cultural and historic areas, eating at tourist
restaurants, etc. Luckily, when I got in touch with Vishal
Rai, whom I met through an internet Kathmandu
metal group, I was able to dive straight into the Nepali
underground metal culture. Vishal grew up in a Nepali
community in Darjeeling, India, and has been active
in the Kathmandu metal community for the past few
years. He brought me to a local metal fest, and told
me all about the obscure metal from his country! The
scene there is just starting up, and you can totally feel

hen I was a tiny tyke, I remember singing along to my dad’s Hank Jr.
