CHAPTER V

SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS

Dairy farming is not only an indispensable component of agriculture, but also


the most suitable production system that has enormous potential to improve the socio-
economic statues of a large percentage of the rural population. In fact, India has the
largest population of cattle and buffalo and currently the largest producer of milk in the
word. India has witnessed a rapid increase in milk production. The problem of poverty,
inequality and regional imbalances can be tracked with the development of
entrepreneurship. However, in all economic development activities, more and more
focus has to be cantered on entrepreneur of the people. Entrepreneur has been
considered as not only vital for starting industries, but also for the development of dairy
enterprises. Moreover, development of the economy of any nation depends primarily
on the important role played by entrepreneurs.

Keeping in view of all these aspects, the present study entitled as


“Entrepreneurial behaviour of dairy farmers in Junagadh district” was conducted with
following specific objectives;

1 To study the socio-economic characteristics of dairy farmers


2 To study entrepreneurial behaviour of dairy farmers
3 To study the relationship between socio-economic characteristics of dairy
farmers with their entrepreneurial behaviour
4 To identify constraints faced by dairy farmers

Based on the objective of the study, Multistage random sampling technique was
used for data collection. At first study was conducted in Junagadh district. At the second
stage two taluka’s namely Keshod and Manavadar were selected dairy farmers. At third
stage 50 farmers from each talukas was selected the dairy farmers. The data was
collected from primary and secondary sources. Well structure questionnaire was
prepared for the collected of primary data. Questionnaire contains data regarding.
Information was collected entrepreneurial behaviour dairy farmers, relationship
between socio-economic characteristics of dairy farmers, constraints faced by dairy
farmers. The other information requires for the study regarding company and its product
were collected directly from the company.

To study the socio-economic profile of farmers in Junagadh district, tabular


method, percentage analysis and graphical method were used. An entrepreneurial
behaviour dairy farmers was carried out by using Mean and Standard deviation method.
Relationship between socio-economic characteristics of dairy farmers with their
entrepreneurial behaviour was carried out by using coefficient of correlation model.
Constraints faced by dairy farmers was calculate with the help of Garrett’s ranking
technique.

5.1 MAJOR FINDINGS OF THE STUDY

5.1.1 Socio-economic profile

It was found that highest per cent of farmers 47 per cent belongs to age group
of 36 years and 32 per cent farmers belongs to the age of 36 to 50 years and only 21 per
cent farmers belongs to the age group of above 50 years. It was found that majority
(24%) farmers had taken education up to secondary level, 14 per cent farmers were
illiterate and only 21 per cent farmers were in the group of graduation. Majority of
farmers (26%) were semi-medium level farmers with >2 to 4 land holding. Majority of
farmers (47%) were small size family. 40 per cent were belonged to income level of up
to 4 lakh. It was found that farmers 79 percent belongs to the agriculture occupation
only 21 farmers belongs to dairy occupation. Majority farmers (44%) were medium
level of milk production. Majority farmers (39%) were herd size of farmers. 49 per cent
farmers were sale of milk.

5.1.2 Entrepreneurial behaviour of dairy farmers

Majority dairy farmers were belongs to high level of entrepreneurial behaviour.

1. Majority of the respondents (62%) had high level of innovativeness.


2. Majority of the respondents (65%) had medium level category of decision
making ability.
3. More than half of the respondents 60 per cent (65%) had high level category
achievement motivation.
4. Nearly half of the dairy farmers 50 per cent (46%) had medium level of risk
orientation.
5. Nearly half of the respondents 50 per cent (47%) high level of information
seeking behaviour.

6. 50 per cent of respondents have belonged to medium category of


cosmopoliteness.
7. Majority of the respondents (61%) had medium level of self-confidence.
8. More than half of the respondents 55 per cent (56%) had high level of economic
motivation.
9. Majority of the respondents (66%) had high level of Management orientation.

5.1.3 Socio-economic characteristic with entrepreneurial behaviour

It was revealed that dairy farmers, co-efficient of correlation of each socio-


economic characteristic with entrepreneurial behaviour of dairy farmers viz; age, Herd
size, Milk production and Milk sale at 5 per cent positive and highly significant. While
education and annual income were positive significant at 10 per cent level. While family
size were significant at 10 per cent level. Other factors such as land holding and
occupation were non-significant relationship with entrepreneurial behaviour.

5.1.4 Constraints faced by farmers

Constraints faced by farmers it was found that lack of market facility is rank
first out of total 11 constraints. Lack of cross breed and improved livestock was ranked
second. Low prices of milk is ranked third. Fourth rank is given to lack of training
facilities. Lower milk production is ranked fifth constraint faced by dairy farmers.
Farmers gave sixth rank to high feed cost. Knowledge regarding marketing of milk
products, awareness about government scheme regarding dairy farming, veterinary
facilities, and green fodder throughout year with seventh, eighth, nine, tenth and
eleventh respectively.

CONCLUSION

In the study revealed that, most of the farmers belongs to young age. Most of
the farmers were educated up to secondary level. Majority of dairy farmers were semi-
medium farmers with small size family. Majority of farmers have medium level of
annual income. Main occupation of dairy farmers is agriculture and have medium level
of herd size with medium level of milk production and milk sale. Study of
entrepreneurial behaviour indicated that majority of the dairy farmers depicted high
level of entrepreneurial behaviour. Co-efficient of correlation of each socio-economic
characteristic with entrepreneurial behaviour of dairy farmers viz; age, herd size, milk

production and milk sale, education and annual income were found positive and
significant. The three major constraints perceived by dairy farmers were lack of market
facilities, lack of cross breed and improved livestock and low prices of milk were
ranked first, second and third, respectively.
