Onshore Plant Design

Onshore Plant Design

Introduction
No two plant layouts are exactly alike.
There is no one ideal plant layout.

Studies and Analyses

Design development is supported by a number of studies and reviews,
including:
 Hazard identification (HAZID Study) and risk assessments – both
qualitative and quantitative
 Operability reviews
 Constructability review
Onshore Plant Design

 A maintainability and logistics evaluation for storage and materials

handling requirements etc.
 Truck and train movement and materials handling study to determine
best location for plant entries and exits.

Design Skills
 Must be aware of safety and ergonomic issues.
 Common sense and reason.
 Understand the plant design intent.
 Overall understanding of how the plant will operate and be maintained.
 Cost conscious.
 Good understanding of construction issues.
 Creative, open minded, multidiscipline background.
 Probing nature, able to question reliability of information or data and
resolve issues.
Onshore Plant Design

 Must be able to defend the chosen design, but able to compromise

while still achieving acceptable results
 Many codes/standards can affect a plant design. First review the
project documents for requirements.
 National, regional or local authority statutory codes may be more
stringent than industry or Customer codes – if so, they take precedence
 Keep the customers’ requirements in mind always. Don’t over design. If
you provide something “nice to have” or “cutting edge technology” that
the customer didn’t ask for or approve, it may cost more & may result in
contractual disputes
Objective
 Fire or explosions in areas of oil and gas refineries have resulted in
extensive losses. Safety-in-Design is a key factor associated with the
layout design of any facility. The principal design criterion is to minimize
or eliminate hazards.

BASIC CONSIDERATIONS
General the plant layout shall be arranged to:
 Maximize safety;
 Prevent spread fire
 Facilitate easy operation and maintenance
 Consider future expansion
 Economize project
 Drainage and grade sloping
 Maintenance and emergency accessibility
