2. GOALS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE
Course goal: To familiarize students with the international certification standards and the IELTS
format, prepare students for passing the IELTS test and studying abroad successfully

Course objectives (Intermediate)


· To develop the students’ reading skills of skimming for main ideas, scanning for specific
information, interpreting, inferring, deducing meanings from the context
· To develop the students’ skills of writing graphs/charts and argumentative essays
· To develop the students’ listening and note-taking skills
· To develop the students’ skills of speaking on a wide range of general, social and professional
topics
· To foster the students’ interest in learning, develop their logical and critical thinking.
Learning Outcomes (Intermediate)
By the end of the course the students will be able to:
· recognize unfamiliar words, correctly use the studied grammar constructions
· demonstrate general and detailed understanding of oral speech.
· demonstrate the skills of skimming and scanning texts with high frequency academic and general
language, interpreting and summarizing academic texts
· speak on the IELTS format situations using the studied academic and general language
· write essays and describe graphs/charts in accordance with the IELTS requirements.

3. Course description
The course IYa 1103 Foreign Language/ IELTS Intermediate, IYa 1104 Foreign Language/ IELTS
Intermediate is designed to help the students develop their English language competence for their
current and future academic studies. The course is focused on building up general/academic
vocabulary, raising their grammar accuracy and developing the IELTS-format Listening, Reading,
Writing and Speaking skills. Intensive classwork is accompanied by ample self-study activities in the
form of language exercises, use of the studied grammar (SIS) in oral speech and academic writing
(TSIS).
4. Academic Policy
Students are forbidden to:
- attend online classes without a textbook or relevant dl materials at hand, otherwise s/he may get the
“0” mark for class participation;
- submit any tasks after the deadline. Late submissions are downgraded.
- cheat. Plagiarized papers shall not be graded;
- be late for classes. Being tardy three times amounts to one absence;
- retake any tests, unless there is a valid reason for missing them;
- leave the online classes without permission.
Students should:
- name themselves when speaking out in an online class
- respond to the teacher’s appeals shortly; otherwise s/he can be qualified as absent;
-actively participate in class discussions;
- prepare in advance all technical means (camera, speakers, laptops, Wi-Fi) necessary for online
classes;
- in case of technical problems, find other ways to participate in online classes (DL, WhatsApp, etc);
- show consideration for and mutual support of teachers and other students;
- let the teacher know of any problems arising in connection with their studies;
- use Microsoft Teams in attending classes.

8. METHODOLOGICAL GUIDELINES
Assessment is administered continuously throughout the course. The students are rated
against their performance in continuous rating administered throughout the semester
(credited 60%) and summative rating done during the examination session (credited
40%), total 100%. Continuous rating is students’ on-going performance in class and
independent work. Class work is assessed for attendance, Language/ skills and in- class
assessments.

Class work is a combination of theoretical basics and practical application of language


skills (listening, reading, writing, and speaking) in diverse situations.

TSIS (Teacher Supervised Student Independent Study) comprises a) Academic Writing


1- GD 1, Essay 1 (done orally in class with the teacher, 5 points); and b) Academic
Writing 2 - GD 2 and Essay 2 (done independently in class, 10 points).

SIS (Student Independent Study) comprises language awareness grammar and


vocabulary exercises from EGU/LHSB and EGU SE/LHWB to be peer-checked in
class, and PV examples to be given by students at home and checked in class under the
teacher’s supervision.

Mid-term is achievement test, speaking and GD writing.

End-of-term comprises achievement test, speaking and writing.


Final examination is an attainment test designed to monitor the students’ academic
performance, comprising 2 parts: writing and speaking.
