"Dedicated to the health & well being of every

household" ~ Vision of Dabur

LEGACY Challenges
In 1884, Dr Burman set up Dabur to produce and
dispense Ayurvedic medicines, reaching out to a
wide mass of people who had no access to proper
treatment. The name Dabur is derived from the
Devanagari rendition of Daktar Burman, a
combination of ‘DA’ from Daktar and ‘BUR’ from
Burman.

TRAIT LEADERSHIP
S. K. Burman's commitment and ceaseless efforts
resulted in the company growing from a fledgling
medicine manufacturer in a small Calcutta house,
to a household name that at once evokes trust
and reliability. .

INTRODUCTION
A leader is someone who can see how things can be improved and who rallies people to move toward that
better vision. Leaders can work toward making their vision a reality while putting people first. Just being
able to motivate people isn’t enough — leaders need to be empathetic and connect with people to be
successful. Leaders don’t have to come from the same background or follow the same path.

Leadership is the ability to influence a group toward the achievement of a vision or set of goals. The source
of influence may be formal, such as that provided by managerial rank in an organization. But not all
managers are leaders, nor are all leaders managers. Just because an organization provides its managers with
certain formal rights is no assurance they will lead effectively. Leaders can emerge from within a group as
well as by formal appointment. Non sanctioned leadership—the ability to influence that arises outside the
formal structure of the organization—is often as important or more important than formal positions of
influence. Organizations need strong leadership and strong management for optimal effective- ness.

LEADERSHIP STYLES-
1. DEMOCRATIC LEADERSHIP- The essence is to involve team members in the decision-making
process. Team members thus feel included, engaged and motivated to contribute. E.g.- Indra Nooyi,
CEO At Pepsi Co.
2. AUTOCRATIC LEADERSHIP- Authoritarian leadership styles allow a leader to impose
expectations and define outcomes. A one-person show can turn out to be successful in situations
when a leader is the most knowledgeable in the team. E.g.- Adolf Hitler
3. TRANSFORMATIONAL LEADERSHIP- the leader inspires his or her followers with a vision
and then encourages and empowers them to achieve it. The leader also serves as a role model for the
vision. E.g.- Barack Obama
4. TRANSACTIONAL LEADERSHIP- use "transactions" between a leader and his or her followers -
rewards, punishments and other exchanges - to get the job done. The leader sets clear goals, and team
members know how they'll be rewarded for their compliance. E.g.- Bill Gates
5. STRATEGIC LEADERSHIP- practice in which executives, using different styles of management,
develop a vision for their organization that enables it to adapt to or remain competitive in a changing
economic and technological climate. E.g.- Hillary Rodham Clinton
6. LAISSEZ FAIRE LEADERSHIP- The direct opposite of autocratic leadership. Instead of a
single leader making all decisions for an organization, group or team, laissez-faire leaders make
few decisions and allow their staff to choose appropriate workplace solutions. E.g.- Queen Victoria

Following challenges were revealed with respect to leadership at Dabur-

1. Difficulty in distinguishing between a leader and a manager.

2. Lack of leadership opportunities and training to employees.

3. Striking a balance between project and people is important for a manager to be a leader. This is often
overlooked in organisations, such as Dabur.

RECOMMENDATIONS –

1. Organisations, should imbibe leadership training as a part of the orientation procedure, in order to
provide equal opportunities to its employees.
2. Management and leadership, should be distinguished through the concept of mentorship in the
organisation. Proper mentorship and good superior subordinate relations can help employees to
emerge as leaders.
3. The importance of listening should be highlighted, as good leaders are always good listeners.
4. Employee networking is important- Networking is not only fun, but essential to individual
growth and business development.
5. Model the leadership skills employees need to adopt in order to become great leaders:
