Make a Sentence
In this speaking activity, students change irregular verbs into the past simple form and then
make past simple sentences with the verbs.

Before class, make one copy of the cards for each group of 3 or 4 students and cut as
indicated.

Procedure

Split the class into groups of 3 or 4.

Give each group a set of cards. Ask them to shuffle the cards and place them face down on
the table.

Students take it in turns to pick up a card.

They look at the base form of the irregular verb and then make up a sentence using the verb
in the past simple tense.

The other group members decide whether they will accept the sentence or not.

If they do, the student’s name is written on the card in the space provided. The card is then
placed in a separate pile.

If they don't accept the sentence, the card is placed at the bottom of the pile.

Play then continues with the next student.

When the students have finished, the name cards are counted.

The student with the highest number of name cards wins.
