SIMPLE PRESENT base form +
compl
• We use the simple present for general in
formation, routines, scheduled
events and habits.

Ex:

• He goes to school every day. (routine)

• Mary likes ice cream. (general

information)

• The movie starts at 9: 00 pm. (scheduled

event)
IMPORTANT!

• We can also use the simple present

to sequence events.

• Ex: 1

• In the morning John wakes up,

eats breakfast, and takes a shower.
2 3
GENERAL TRUTHS
• We can use the simple
present to talk about
general truths (general
information or events that
always happen).
Ex: Simple
present

• Plants give us oxygen.

(general truth)
PRESENT
PROGRESSIVE/CONTINUOUS

• We use the present

progressive to talk about activities we
do in the moment.
Ex:
What are you doing now?
• I'm reading a book.

(she is doing the action in this moment) Subj + be + verb-

ing + (compl)
IMPORTANT!

• Sometimes we can use the "present

progressive" to talk about a
temporary action.
Ex:
• At the moment, I'm living in Paris.

This is a temporary action.

The person is not going to
live in Paris forever
IMPORTANT!

• You can also use the

present progressive to
talk about actions that
are in progress but are
not happening right
now. (in the future)
Ex:
• He's spending a lot of
time on the computer
these days. (future)
Subj + be + verb-ing
BE CAREFUL! "love" is a stative
verb. We can't put
it in –ing form

• Don't use "the present

progressive/continuous" with non-
action verbs (stative verbs).
Ex:
• We are loving our teacher.

• We love our teacher.

These verbs don't talk

about actions.
PRESENT PERFECT Subj + aux (have / has)
+ past participle
• We use the present perfect for ac
tions that started in the past and
continue in the present.
Ex:
I've studied English for 1 year and
I like it.

(the action started in the past

and continues in the present)
REMEMBER !
• We can also use "the
present perfect" to
describe actions
that are completed
and have
connection to the
present.
Completed
action
Ex:
• I've bought 2 cell
phones until now.
Ex: I've watched this movie 2 times already
PRESENT PERFECT Subj + have/has + been +
CONTINUOUS/PROGRESSIVE verb-ing

• We can also use "the present perfect

continuous/progressive" for actions that started
in the past and continue in the
present. When we use
"for" or "since, "the present perfect" and
"present perfect continuous" have the same meaning
.
Ex:
• I've played soccer since I was a child The same
meaning
Or
• I've been playing soccer since I was a child.
REMEMBER !
• Use "for" + a
length (period) of time = the
number of years/ months/
days
Ex:
• Mary has worked at her
company for 6 years.

• Use "since" + a starting point

= the exact year/ month
• Ex:
• Mary has worked at her
company since 2013.
ACTION/ACTIVE
VERBS
"Action verbs" are verbs that describe
"activities /
actions" or what the subject is doing.
Ex:
• I run in the park every day.

"run" is an action
verb because it is
describing an
action.
ACTION/ACTIVE
VERBS

• Use the verb in

"base form" to describe
the action in
general.
• Ex:
• I work at a school.
(action in
general/routine)
ACTION/ACTIVE
VERBS
• Use "the present
progressive/continuous" to describe
part of an action (an action in
progress).

Ex:
• Right now I'm writing a letter.

(action in progress)
NON-ACTION /STATIVE
VERBS
• "Non-action" verbs don't describe
"actions/activities". These verbs describe emotions,
desire, possession, opinions or appearance. Reme
mber, we can't use these verbs in –ing form.
Ex:
• I'm wanting ice cream. (desire)

• I want ice cream.

EXCEPTIONS!
• Some non-action verbs can
be used to describe actions. When they are used to describe acti
ons we can use the –ing form. But when we do
this, they have different meanings.
Ex:
• I have a new laptop. (possession of the laptop)

• I'm having problems with the new laptop. (experiencing

problems with the laptop)
ACTION VERBS WITH
ADVERBS

• We usually use "adverbs"

with action verbs.
• Ex:
• He works hard at his job.

Action
verb adverb
NON-ACTION VERBS WITH
ADJECTIVES
• We normally use the verbs "look, sound, feel
, smell, and taste" to show states/opinions.
In this situation they are used with adjectives.
Ex:
• He feels bad about the situation.
Not
He feels badly about the situation
BE CAREFUL !
Some non-action verbs (sense) are sometimes used
for actions. In this case they are used with
adverbs.
Ex:
I can't hear well because everybody is talking.
In this case we use
"hear" as an action
verb because it is the
sense verb adv action of using your
ears
OTHER EXCEPTION!
• When we want to describe
"the behavior/conduct" of a person with
the verb "be", we can
use the present progressive form
(being)
Ex:
• Today, he is not being nice.

Use the verb "to

be" in the present Being =
continuous behaving
form "being"
EXCEPTION !
• When we want to describe our emotions with the verb "feel"
we can make an exception and use the present progressive.

Ex #1: Ex #2:
A: "How are you feeling today, Luis?" A: "How do you feel/How are you, Luis?
B: " I am feeling great today ". B: "I feel great today".

Ex # 1 is an answer to
someone's question if
he/she is asking about your Ex # 2 is an answer to
health because maybe you a general "How do you
were sick the last time you feel?/ How are you?"
talked to your friend. So it question.

GRAMMAR
PRE SE NTATION

• I visited France in 2005. We can use the

simple past to
describe some
principal events
in a story

express an action/event or
opinion that occured at a general
time in the past.
Ex:

now she doesn't
This opinion was at a
general time in the past.
(there's no specific
time)

Subj + was/were + verb-ing
• Use the Past
continuous/progressive to indicate
that an action was in progress, but
we didn't finish the action because
it was interrupted.
• We usually have 2 actions
Ex: The action I
didn't finish

I was studying for my final exam,

when the phone rang. The
interruption

past and
continues in the

Subj + used to + verb
USED TO base form

habit/ event that was true in the
past but not in the present. We
usually describe actions that we did
all the time in the past but we
stopped doing in the present.
Ex: Habit
in the
past

I used to play video games when

I was a kid. But now I don't do it
anymore.
BE CAREFUL!
• We can only use "used to" to describe all our past life events(location,
possession/emotions (state of being) or occupations). In this situation,
we can't use "would".
Ex:
I used to live in Los Angeles. (location)

I used to be happy. (emotion)
