Lesson Plan: Focus Question: What Are The Properties of Pyramids?

This lesson plan outlines a mathematics lesson for 5th grade students about triangular and square based pyramids. The lesson will last 1 hour. Students will learn the properties of pyramids through group research using online resources. They will compare and contrast triangular and square based pyramids by completing a table to identify the number of faces, edges, and vertices of each type. Students will then present their findings by answering questions about identifying features of the pyramids, their bases, similarities and differences between the two types. The goal is for students to understand the key properties and be able to distinguish between triangular and square based pyramids.

Lesson Plan

Subject: Mathematics Grade: 5 M Duration: 1 hr

Unit title: Geometry Focus question:

❖ What are the properties of pyramids?

Lesson Topic: Triangular and Square Based Pyramid

Pre-requisite knowledge: Students should already know how to

❖ identify and name plane shapes.
❖ identify faces, edges, and vertices of prisms.

Specific Objectives: At the end of this lesson, students should be able to:
1. state the properties of triangular and square-based pyramids with 80 %accuracy after
doing group research.
2. compare the similarities and differences between triangular and square-based pyramids
after making an observation.
3. identify at least 3 real-life objects with triangular and square pyramids in the
environment after viewing a PowerPoint.
4. draw and label the face, edge, vertex, and base of a pyramid in the environment
accurately after a class discussion.
5. Accurately make a model of pyramids after drawing a pyramid in the environment.

Content Summary:

▪ A Pyramid is a polyhedron from which the base is a polygon. All the faces are
triangular and they meet at a common vertex called the apex. The pyramid is
named by the shape of the base (square or triangle ).
▪ Vertex (Vertices - Plural) - Point where the edges meet
▪ face- this is the flat surface of the solid

Term 2, Unit 3 2020/2021 1

Teacher: NICKESHA MURRAY School: OCHO RIOS PRIMARY

▪ An edge-line segment is where the faces meet

▪ Congruent - same size and shape (in this case the all the faces are triangles
and they are of the same shape and sizes)
▪ Apex- the vertex at the "top" (opposite the base)

Engage The teacher will review the last class

lesson by selecting a few students to
share their screen then create one-
plane shapes on the geoboard for
the rest of the class to identify and
name them.

The teacher will ask the students if

they are able to identify a pyramid
among their 3D shapes and tell what
it is. After receiving a few responses
the teacher will give the meaning of a
pyramid, and identify the two types
of pyramids that will be used in the
lesson (see content).
