Wait, what? Are they completely the same????
How do I know if an object is a living thing?
● Movement - All living things move in some way. This may be obvious, such as animals that are able to walk, or
less obvious, such as plants that have parts that move to track the movement of the sun.
● Sensitivity - The ability to detect changes in the surrounding environment.
● Growth - All living things grow.
● Reproduction - The ability to reproduce and pass genetic information onto their offspring.
● Excretion - Getting rid of waste.
● Nutrition - The intake and use of nutrients. This occurs in very different ways in different kinds of living things.
Red blood cells (RBC)
Differentiation
● Red blood cells - carry oxygen
from our lungs to the rest of our
bodies
● Neurons - are cells within the
nervous system that transmit
information to other nerve cells,
muscle, or gland cells
● Muscle cells - make up muscles,
which attached to bones or
internal organs and blood
vessels, are responsible for
movement
● Reproductive cells - nurture the
developing offspring
Organelles
Organelle Function Cell types
Cell membrane Controls what molecules allowed in and out of the All cells
cell. Also called plasma membrane.
Cell wall Provides and maintains the shape of the cells and Plants,
serves as a barrier. prokaryotes
Cytoplasm The liquid that fills the cell. Here lots of reactions All cells
take place.
Chloroplasts Uses the energy from sunlight to form glucose and Plants
O2 from CO2 and H2O
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum Puts together lipids All eukaryotes
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum Has ribosomes on it. Build proteins and modifies All eukaryotes
them.
Golgi complex Receives products from ER and modifies further. All eukaryotes
Send the products to their final destinations.
Vacuoles Stores food, water, etc. In plants helps to keep the All eukaryotes
shape and rigidity of the cell.
