TUTORIAL 2

ROOT FINDINGS (PART B : OPEN METHODS)

1. Given d=20v + e5v where d=8, find v using the Newton Raphson method with stopping criteria, a<
1%. Use intial guess v =0. (12 m)
Test 1 Sem 2, 2008/2009, Answer: v = 0.2367, a = 0.04%

2. The population of two organisms living in one area is given by the two equations below:
P A =100 e−t
2
PB =200 t

Using the Newton Raphson method with three iterations each, find

(a) The time when the population of both organisms are equal (10.5 m)
(b) The time when population of species B is twice the population of species A (11.5 m)
(c) Which time should be larger and justify your answer (3 m)

Test 1 Sem 2, 2012/2013, Answer: (a) 0.539846 (b) 0.703467 (c) The time for (b) should be larger due to the fact that organism A has
a decaying characteristic while organism B has a growing characteristic.

3. Ohm’s law states that the voltage drop, V across an ideal resistor is linearly proportional to
the current, i flowing through the resistor as inV =i× R , where R is the resistance. The
following equation was obtained from an experiment that measured the current flow through a
resistor of 15 ohm at particular time:

3 2 2
I ( t )=213.95 t −350.65 t +101.01 t −2.14

Use the Newton-Raphson method to calculate the time and maximum current through the
resistor. Use an initial guess of 0 s, and perform the computation until a is less than the stopping
criterion of s = 0.10 %.
(Note: the maximum or minimum value of a function with one variable exists at a point where the
first derivative of the function with respect to the variable is zero.) (25 m)

Test 1 Sem 2, 2013/2014, Answer: t=0.170701, a =0.000586, I ( 0.170701 ) =5.76917

4. An engineer is conducting an experiment to estimate the distance of a charge, q from the center of
a ring-shaped conductor to obtain 1N of force exerted by the ring conductor as shown in Figure 1.
A total charge Q is uniformly distributed around a ring-shaped conductor with a radius, r of 0.9m.
The force exerted on the charge by the ring is given by

1 qQx
F=
4 π e 0 ( x +r 2 )3 /2
2

where e 0 = 8.85 × 10-12 C2/(N.m2).

and x 0=¿ 2. Determine the number of iterations to obtain answer to ε s = 10.00%. (30 m)

Test 1 Sem 1, 2014/2015, Answer: x =1.5034, a =3.5145, number of iterations required: 5
