➢ Literary context means understanding the literary genre. Determining the literary genre helps in understanding the
context of the passage.

interpret things. How people react may be credited to their previous experiences.

produced. There is no literary piece that can be fully appreciated without knowing the historical context.

When Philippines was discovered by Magellan 'Cause Lapu-Lapu is very hard"
They were sailing day and night, across the big ocean
Until they saw a small Limasawa island Then the battle began at dawn
Bolos and spears versus guns and cannons
Magellan landed in Limasawa at noon When Magellan was hit on his neck
The people met him very welcome on the shore He stumbled down and cried and cried
They did not understand the speaking they have done
Because Kastila gid at Waray-Waray man Oh, mother, mother, I am sick
Call the doctor very quick
When Magellan landed in Cebu City Doctor, doctor, shall I die?
Rajah Humabon met him, they were very happy Tell my mama, do not cry
All people were baptized and built the church of Christ Tell my mama, do not cry
And that's the beginning of our Catholic life Tell my mama, do not cry

Sad Little Houses Please refer on the rubric below.

by
Amparo R. Asuncion

The sad little houses, the poor little houses

Crowded by the riverside.
The holes in their roofs, the cracks in their walls
Vainly they try to hide.

The stench of the river, the dark, muddy river

Is with them night and day,
Pure, fresh air may be had for the moving
But they can’t move away.

They can only stand by the bank of the river

Buried knee-deep in clay.
They can only stare at the drifting garbage
Until they, too decay.

And, pass away into ghosts of houses

Killed by burning sun,
Smothered with dust and then forgotten-
Forgotten by everyone.
