Groupwork activities ToT1

After having studied the ToT1 online materials in detail, there are a number of groupwork activities
to carry out. For this purpose we ask you to divide yourselves in five groups of 4-5 persons each.

ToT1 Groupwork 1 – Monitoring

a) (In collaboration with the other groups). Go into the field and measure water levels at two
existing observation wells. In a table write down:
• name of the well
• type of well (observation or pumping well)
• coordinates and date
• water table depth in meters, measured from a fixed reference point at the surface
• height of the piezometer head above surface level (may change over time!)
• depth of the well
• elevation of the well head
• water table height in meters above mean sea level.
b) (In collaboration with the other groups and with FIPAG) Go into the field to collect samples
of the river and of two wells for major ion, nutrient and heavy metal analysis. Perform field
measurements of EC, pH, temperature, alkalinity and nitrate through nitrate strips.
c) Submit a report with field measurements on water level and water quality, and a small map
with location of monitoring points. In addition, refer to any differences between the sites
and the measured outcomes

ToT1 Groupwork 2 – Borehole drilling and logging (in collaboration with the other groups).

a) Collect a borehole log from an existing well in or near the sand river (with help of colleagues
from FIPAG) and discuss the hydraulic properties of the different layers found in the
borehole log.
b) Find a location where you suspect the continuation of sand layers below the clays in the
river bank. Such locations could be near the well of Dona Anita, as well as other locations on
the inner bend of a meander of the Limpopo river.
c) Make a manual drilling in the river bank near the sand river, or in the sand river right next to
the river bank. Write down the coordinates of the drilling.
d) Evaluate sediment type and texture (with the help of a sand ruler) of each layer. Discuss the
hydraulic properties of the material found. Write down the thickness and properties found
for each layer in a drilling log.
e) Indicate at what depth the water table was found.
f) Discuss how you would go further with drilling below the water table.
g) Discuss how you would install an observation well.
h) Discuss how you would install a pumping well for drinking water vs. irrigation.
i) Discuss how resistivity surveying would help you further assess the vertical and lateral
continuation of the sand layer.
j) Provide a brief report on the findings for each question.
ToT1 Groupwork 3 – Evaluation of ToT1

a) Discuss the content of ToT1, in particular with regard to what you think is relevant for the
first training that you will give to other organisations (and therefore translating into
Portuguese).
b) Explain if there is missing information in ToT1.
c) Indicate which organisations you think should be trained on this content and how it can be
combined with the subsequent trainings for drinking water and irrigation, within a multiple
use framework.
d) What do you see as possible pathways for scaling the uptake of exploitation of NBS?
e) We have suggested the following trainings for you to provide to others:
• TmT1 on sustainable NBS use for domestic water supply within a Multiple-Use
Services framework
• TmT2 on sustainable NBS use for irrigation within a Multiple-Use Services framework
Do you agree with the proposed trainings, and/or do you have suggestions for
modifications?
f) Write a 1-page summary on your findings for questions a-e.

Groupwork assignment in preparation of ToT2

Visit two locations in the area (per group) where you know/think there is a domestic water demand
issue, and try to assess the potential of the use of sand river aquifer in this area for water supply.
Check and assess the following aspects:

a) the alternative water sources in the area (quantify by type such as pond, HDW, borehole,
RWH and by pumping type such as handpump, solar pump, petrol pump, bucket etc );
b) the size of the community and corresponding demand;
c) Mark on a simple map or google earth image the current water sources;
d) the number of wells, pumping hours and rates required to satisfy the demand ;
e) Estimate the number of people covered through self-supply and communal supply;
f) the willingness to pay for water supply or type of payment arrangement in place.
