1. What is quality of work life
Ans. Quality of work life is a concept which talks about the overall focus on
employee as a person rather than just the work done by him/her. Quality
of Work Life is becoming an increasingly popular concept in recent times.
It basically talks about the methods in which an organization can ensure
the holistic well-being of an employee instead of just focusing on work-
related aspects.
It is an improvised HRD mechanism which attempts to design and to
develop the work environments for the employees working at all levels. It
is one of the major issues faced by the organizations. QWL is not only
related to the achievement of greater human satisfaction, but also aims at
improving productivity, adaptability and effectiveness of organizations.

2. What are the factors contributing to QWL?

Ans:

a) Job Satisfaction: job satisfaction refers to how satisfied an employee is

at his/her organization. Factors such as working environment, people at
work, job security, and work responsibilities majorly impact an
individual's job dissatisfaction levels. With better job satisfaction comes
an improved quality of work life. An employee who is satisfied with his
position at the company is more likely to do good work. Consequently,
job dissatisfaction is more likely to lower employee engagement as well
as higher turnover rates.

b) Workplace Stress: Stress is a silent killer. This is especially true for

most working individuals. With the added pressure to manage their
work-life, employees feel extreme levels of stress. Not only does it
impact their physical health, but it affects their emotional wellbeing as
well.
c) Financial Reimbursement: The purpose behind any work is to get a
substantial income in return. Rewards, pay, and benefits enhance
organizational QWL. With better compensation, employees are more
involved in their work. Unless the company provides extrinsic
motivation (in the form of better financial gain), workers will less likely
go beyond the job requirements. After obtaining good pay, employees
are more likely to find job satisfaction as well as more committed to
achieving the company's goals.

d) Work-Life Balance: The modern worker wants to balance his life at

work with his personal life. That means more remote working and more
flexible work hours. Achieving a satisfactory work-life balance is a
significant factor in the quality of work-life. Splitting time, energy, and
resources into two different aspects of your life is challenging. Adding to
this challenge are obstacles such as long hours of commute, family
commitments, or longer working hours.

3. What are the ways in which QWL can be enhanced?

Ans:
a) Reward and Recognition: There should be a reward and recognition
system that includes both material as well as psychological rewards.
Reward begets commitment and the bottom-line for any employee to
work is to earn proper reward and recognition. This is the main reason
why everyone works and once this is given to an employee, he will be
motivated to invest more time and energy in his job.

b) Growth Opportunities: Another powerful measure which can cause

commitment among employees is growth opportunities provided by the
company. Growth and development an inborn need of human beings
and everyone desires to achieve growth. There are many ways which a
company can adopt to help its employees grow.

c) Vision and Get Supported: Organizations and its leaders must provide
a compelling vision of the future to the employees. People will act if they
can visualize what they are supposed to achieve. An effective leader will
motivate people by giving them a vision of what they can become and
how they can transform their organizations. People are vision directed.

d) Good Working Environment: Today people spend their major portion

of time at work. One major factor which employees would highly
appreciate is the congenial working environment, where they are happy
to work with others. Teamwork, cooperation, friendship with colleagues
and bosses and mutual respect are the signs of a good working
environment.

e) Empowerment: Empowerment means giving people the power,

authority, freedom and responsibility to carry out their jobs. This give
them a sense of control over their work and makes them feel worthy of
doing things on their own.
