Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

This chapter explains how the research’s comes up with the study. It includes

the statement of the problem and how significant it is.

Introduction

“Extend protection to labor, strengthen the constitutional rights of workers to

self-organization, collective bargaining and peaceful concerted activities, foster

industrial peace and harmony, promote the preferential use of voluntary modes of

settling labor disputes, and reorganize the national labor relations commission”

(R.A No. 6715 Labor Code of the Philippines)

Trade Union or Labor organizations in the Philippines are organizations

sanctioned by Labor Code of the Philippines as an acknowledgement of Filipino

workers’ freedom to self-organize. Labor organizations aim to promote

enlightenment among Filipino workers concerning their wages, hour of work and

other legal rights. Aside from its concern about monetary and legal rights, labor

organizations help to improve social environment of the workers.

Work fills a huge part in our life and because of that workers try their best to

satisfy themselves with their work and to satisfy themselves within their job they

have to love their work. Having to love ones’ job is called Job Satisfaction. Job

satisfaction achieved through having the workers monetary, legal rights served and

positive social environment which is the aim of the Labor organization. Job

satisfaction is also advantageous for the employers (private sectors) and government

(public sectors) as it is one important factor to have good quality work standard.

The most respected profession in the world is Teacher. Teachers are the

foundation of a nation; they are the one who creates a lawyer, engineer, doctor,

politician, etc. However, even though teaching is the noblest profession, there’s a lot

of situation that shows how the government disregard the well-being of the public

school teachers that encourage them to seek a membership in Labor organization.

The Teacher’s Dignity Coalition (TDC) is a Labor organization in Kalayaan

Elementary School (KES) that is self-organized by the teachers in order to become

the voice of the teachers. TDC’s purpose is to improve the well-being of the

teachers.As a Labor Organization, TDC should be effective; it should have the

competence to protect and become a reliable organization for the welfare of those

teachers.

That is the reason this study attempt to assess the effectiveness of the

Teacher’s Dignity Coalition, because TDC should become a way for the teachers of

Kalayaan Elementary School achieve job satisfaction in their workplace as job

satisfaction is important for every teacher.

Background of the Study

This study is all about the Kalayaan Elementary School’s teachers’ perception

of effectiveness of Teacher’s Dignity Coalition in terms of achieving job satisfaction,

which is the Labor Organization in the Kalayaan Elementary School. Kalayaan

Elementary School is located at Phase 10-A, Bagong Silang Langit Rd, Caloocan,

Metro Manila. This study simply questioned if does Teacher’s Dignity Coalition

helps its members in Kalayaan Elementary School in particular. We conduct some

survey for the teachers about it to gather some information to know effectively the

effects of Teacher’s Dignity Coalitionto the teachers especially in relation to achieve

job satisfaction.

Job satisfaction is the positive feelings about one’s job resulting from an

evaluation of its characteristics. For the Employer and Employee, Job satisfaction is

an important concern, this is because of the benefit it brings to both. There are a lot

of benefits for both employer and employee when the employees are satisfied with

their jobs, like high productivity, loyalty to the company, better life satisfaction, etc.

Disgruntled workers who are not satisfied with their job will not be committed and

productive. In present studies, there are factors associated with job satisfaction such

as salary, work itself, relationship with co-workers and job security, which can be

ensured or improve by taking part in a Labor organization.

The Teacher’s Dignity Coalition (TDC) is a labor organization in Kalayaan

Elementary School (KES) founded in April 8, 2006, TDC envision an educational

community where all teachers are united in upholding their dignity and awareness of

their relevance in the society. TDC is formed in order to unite the teachers in a

formidable movement, to raise the teachers’ awareness of their conditions, to defend

the rights and welfare of the teachers and to fight for the improvement of teachers’

socio-economic status.

The TDC conduct programs to realize its mission and vision, one of those

programs is their conducting of forum-consultation. The latest Forum-Consultation

conducted by the TDC was dated February 22, 2018; it was a National Forum-

Consultation on Education and Child Welfare Policies. The said forum is about the

Teacher’s rights and empowerment and children’s protection and welfare. Aside from

its initiative in taking actions, the TDC vowed to campaign and fight for a just

compensation for Public School Teachers.

Those are some starting points to know and assess the effectiveness of Labor

organization towards achieving job satisfaction.

Statement of the Problem

This research attempts to observe the effectiveness of Teacher’s Dignity

Coalition towards achieving job satisfaction of selected teachers in Kalayaan

Elementary School. More specifically this research seeks to find answers to the

following questions:

1. What is the demographic profiling of the respondents of this research?

2. What are the benefits of the teachers that are being ensured by being a

member of the Teacher’s Dignity Coalition in Kalayaan Elementary

School?

3. What is the effect of being a member of the Teacher’s Dignity Coalition

with regards to the school management in terms of granting a reward and

promotion to the teachers of Kalayaan Elementary School?

4. How does ensuring the well-being of the members of the Teacher’s

Dignity Coalition in terms of benefits and social relationship affect the

teacher’s job satisfaction?

5. How does the members of the Teacher’s Dignity Coalition perceived the

job satisfaction?

6. How this research can help the teachers in Kalayaan Elementary Schools

to achieve job satisfaction? Should this research recommend or encourage

the teachers to take part in the Teacher’s Dignity Coalition?

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

Out of all the teachers of Kalayaan Elementary School, 30 teachers were used

as a sample in conducting the survey.

This study limits its coverage to the Teachers who are a member of Teacher’s

Dignity Coalition in KES. The teachers who become our respondent are all currently

working in KES and official members of the TDC in the said school. The major part

of the quantity of respondents is married and has children. This study disregard

whether the respondents is male or female as long as they meet the certain criteria to

answer our survey form. Its purpose is to assess the effectiveness of TDC towards

achieving job satisfaction and to recommend a certain way to help the teachers

achieve job satisfaction.

This study considers every aspects of the respondent’s personal information

that has an impact to their job satisfaction only, such as their opinions toward

achieving job satisfaction. Each of the teachers is given the same questionnaires to

answer. And this study focuses on the current teachers taking their teaching at the

KES of the present school year 2018-2019.

Significance of the Study

The generation of this study would be a great contribution to the vast

knowledge in relation to the teacher’s job satisfaction. The result of this research

could be highly significant and beneficial to the following:

Kalayaan Elementary School Teachers. They are the teachers of Kalayaan

Elementary School. They are considered as the main concern of this study that wants

to assess the Teachers’ Dignity Coalition’s effectiveness in achieving job satisfaction.

In this study, the findings of this research will serve as a suggestion for them on what

is an effective way to achieve job satisfaction.

Public and Private Sector Employees. They are the workers throughout the

state. The result of this study will serve as a suggestion or recommendation for them

on what is an effective way to achieve job satisfaction.

Students. They are the students who will someday become someone who

would seek job satisfaction in their work. The result of this study will help them to

have an idea on what labor organization can contribute in having job satisfaction.

And also those student who will someday research the same topic as this research, it

will help them to have some idea on their research.

Department of Labor and Employment. They are the one who is in power

to change and develop the labor system of our state. This research can serve as help

for their evaluation for the effectiveness of the organizations sanctioned by Labor

Code of the Philippines.

Department of Education. They are the one who is in power and authority

to improve the welfare of the teachers. This research can serve as one of suggestion

for them on how they can improve the welfare of the teachers.

Researchers. As a future worker or employee it will help us to know more in

advance how labor organization will help us in terms of achieving job satisfaction.
