Assignment 2: Analysis of Transmission and Distribution Networks.
Modelling Introduction.

Learning Outcomes of Assignment:

The primary aim of this assignment is to gain familiarity with the following concepts:
(a) Transmission and distribution systems and their analysis;
(b) Power factor analysis and its balancing.
(c) MATLAB Modelling.
ASSESSMENT.
This assignment will be assessed according to the following criteria (100 marks total) and it will
contribute 20% towards the final mark of the course:
• Each question will contribute 20% to the total mark of the report.
Plagiarism will not be tolerated and will result in 0 mark for both participating parties. You should
not only present results but analyse them in accordance with the theoretical fundamentals and
calculations, done by yourself.
Required Software and Hardware:
Suggested to use MATLAB Simulink software package with Simscape Electrical toolbox. It will
help you to check your answers. No need to provide simulation models or results for the
assignment.
Tasks to complete.
The following system should be analysed:

Where G-1 and 4-M are the distribution systems (parameters for MV) and the link 2-3 is the
transmission system (HV notions). Generator and motor (load) are directly connected to the MV
system and they don’t require additional transformation of the voltage level. You should analyse
the system, using the following parameters:
HV, kV Length of MV, kV Length of Base Load
HV, km MV, km G, M,
First name Surname MW MW

The following should be noted:

1) Transformers: ratings are equal to the rating of the base generation power, both T1 and T2
have operating voltages of HV and MV, as given to each student. Internal impedance for
both transformers is X=0.1 p.u.
2) MV distributions lines have impedance of (0.01+j0.12) Ohm/km; HV transmission lines
have impedances of (0.005+j0.08) Ohm/km. Length of the distribution lines for G-1 and
4-M are equal and can be found as (0.5*(Length of MV from the table)).
3) Losses in Generator are presented as X=0.2 p.u.
4) Resistance of the motor are shown as X=0.2 p.u.

You should analyse the following (each section worth 15%):

a) Draw the system diagram with all values being converted in p.u. values and construct
impedance matrices of the system.
b) Analyse the applied phase shift in the transmission and distribution systems, considering
that the output of Generator has 00 phase shift. Calculate current in each segment of the
network.
c) Calculate required capacitor, needs to be added before the motor to achieve PF unity.
d) THIS SECTION WORTH 55%. You should submit three certificates of completion of
MATLAB Courses, which include: MATLAB on RAMP, Simulink on RAMP and
Simscape on RAMP. Each of them will give you 15%. Additional fourth certificate should
be selected by you, and it will provide you remaining 10%.

What to submit:
You should clearly write all solutions to the questions and separate the calculations.
You should scan the solutions if they are hand-written.
Submit the file via Google Classroom Dropbox.
You must attach a title page with information: course title, assignment name and your student ID
and name.
You should add the certificates of MATLAB courses completion after the mathematical solution.
