Airbus BelugaXL
BelugaXL in detail
The XL uses different features from various
A330 variants: it has the -200’s lower
forward/central fuselage and wings, the
-300’s aft fuselage and tailplane, parts of the
A330 Freighter, and the landing gear and
engine pylons common to the -200/-300.
Despite the visual resemblance between
the generations, the XL’s loadable cargo
hold is 7.7m longer and 1m wider than the
ST, enabling it to transport two A350 wings
instead of the single one the first-generation
variant can carry.
The XL has 2,615m³ of available cargo
volume, up from the ST’s 1,450m³. Its
maximum take-off weight – or MTOW – is
227,000kg (up from 155,000kg) and payload
is 53,000kg (up from 47,000kg).
With two General Electric CF6-80C2A8
engines generating 57,866lb st equipping
the ST, the XL uses more powerful and
efficient Rolls-Royce Trent 700 turbofans
rated at 71,000lb st each.
A dorsal fin connecting the vertical tailplane
to the fuselage is triangular on the ST; on
the XL it is 50% larger and has a ‘kink’ in
the diagonal line. The vertical tailplane and
auxiliary vertical end-fins are slightly taller
and the horizontal tailplane box wider on
each side. A completely new feature on the
XL are ventral fins fitted to the bottom of the
aft fuselage, which help provide stability.
The XL also features Airbus’ Skywise digital
platform, which sends aircraft performance
and maintenance data into a secure
cloud-based platform to provide predictive
maintenance and help manage operations.
