SOME IMPORTANT LABORATORY APPARATUSES IN ORGANIC CHEMISTRY
Round-bottomed flask
-used to contain chemicals when preparing gases
in a process which requires heating
Graduated cylinder
-used to measure the volume of a liquids,
chemicals or solutions during the lab daily work Separatory funnel
-used for separating liquids with different
densities -used to dispense liquids into other container, usually as part of an extraction process -used when you need a controlled flow rate, but not the measuring accuracy of a burette or pipette
Vacuum adapter
-used in a distillation set-up: it connects to
the lower end of the condenser and serves to direct the distilled liquid into the receiving flask Claisen adapter
-used to connect a round bottom flask to a
condenser -used to accept a thermometer adapter for temperature measurements in a distillation -used in situations which require more than one outlet from a round-bottom flask
Inlet thermometer adapter
- usually used in a distillation apparatus with
a thermometer or bleeding tube -placed on a 3-way distillation adapter to monitor the vapor temperature -can be placed on a multi way boiling flask used as a syringe port Erlenmeyer flask
- used to contain liquids and for mixing,
heating, cooling, incubation, filtration, storage, and other liquid-handling processes
Cork ring
- used to hold round bottom flasks, beakers and
other glass containers snuggly to ensure against breakage Pasteur pipette
-used to transfer liquids and samples during
laboratory
Distilling column
-an essential item used in the distillation of
liquid mixtures to separate the mixture into its component parts, or fractions, based on the differences in volatilities.
