Questions
1. Solubility test. Give your observations and explanations on the reaction of benzene to
water.
Benzene does not react with water because of its stability so it does not undergo
any changes.

2. Combustion reactions. Give your observations and explanations on the reaction of benzene
after ignition.
When burned, benzene has black soot and bluish flame. Its products are carbon
dioxide and water.

3. Oxidation reactions. Give your observations and explanations on the reaction of benzene
toward oxidizing agents.
Benzene reacts with ozone to give a benzene trizonide.

4. Nitration reactions. Give your observations and explanations on the reaction of benzene to
nitration.
In this reaction, a bonded hydrogen atom is replaced by a −NO2 group. Benzene can
be reacted with concentrated nitric acid (HNO3), with concentrated sulfuric acid (H2SO4)
acting as a catalyst at a temperature of 50°. The product will be nitrobenzene.

5. Bromination reactions. Give your observations and explanations on the reaction of benzene
to bromine.
For bromination of benzene to take place, a catalyst is needed. The catalyst makes
the Br2 molecule more electrophilic by reacting with it to give FeBr4- and Br+. The
electrophilic Br+ then reacts with the electron-rich (nucleophilic) benzene ring to yield a
nonaromatic carbocation intermediate. The reaction between benzene and bromine in the
presence of either aluminum bromide or iron gives bromobenzene. The reactions happen
at room temperature.
