Ext 1 Solve the following linear inequalities.
a x+3<8 b t–2>6 c p + 3 ≥ 11
d 4x – 5 < 7 e 3y + 4 ≤ 22 f 2t – 5 > 130
g <8 h ≤5 i ≥7

m 3x + 1 ≥ 2x – 5 n 6t – 5 ≤ 4t + 3 o 2y – 11 ≤ y – 5
p 3x + 2 ≥ x + 3 q 4w – 5 ≤ 2w + 2 r 2(5x – 1) ≤ 2x + 3
Ext 2 Write down the values of x that satisfy each of the following.
a x – 2 ≤ 3, where x is a positive integer.
b x + 3 < 5, where x is a positive, even integer.
c 2x – 14 < 38, where x is a square number.
d 4x – 6 ≤ 15, where x is a positive, odd number.
e 2x + 3 < 25, where x is a positive, prime number.
Ext 3 Frank had $6. He bought three cans of cola and lent his brother $3.
When he got home he put a 50 cent coin in his piggy bank.
What was the most the cans of cola could have cost?
Ext 4 Solve the following linear inequalities.
a 9 < 4x + 1 < 13 b 2 < 3x – 1 < 11 c –3 < 4x + 5 ≤ 21
d 2 ≤_ 3x – 4 < 15 e 10 ≤ 2x + 3 < 18 f –5 ≤ 4x – 7 ≤ 8
g 3 ≤ 5x – 7 ≤ 13 h 8 ≤ 2x + 3 < 19 i 7 ≤ 5x + 3 < 24
Ext 5 The perimeter of this rectangle is greater than 10 but less than 16.
What are the limits of the area?

Ext 6 A teacher asks six students to stand at the front of the class and
hold up the following cards.

x>0 x<2 x≥3 x=2 x=3 x<9

She writes ‘TRUE’ on one side of the board and ‘FALSE’ on the other side.
She asks the other students to call out a number, and the students holding the cards have
to stand on the ‘TRUE’ side if their card is true for the number, or on the ‘FALSE’ side if it isn’t.
a A student calls out ‘2’ and the students all go to the correct side.
i Which cards are held by the students on the ‘TRUE’ side?
ii Which cards are held by the students on the ‘FALSE’ side?
b Find a value that would satisfy this grouping:
True False

x≥3 x<9 x>0 x<2 x=2 x=3
