Strand 2 ALGEBRA
Sub Strand 2.3 Solving Expressions (Linear Equations and In-equations)

Content Learning At the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
Outcome ➢ Solve simple algebraic equations.
➢ Solve algebraic equations involving variable on both sides of
the equations. Solve simple quadratic algebraic equations.
➢ Solve linear in-equation problems with variable on both sides
of the inequality.

Lesson Notes :
2.3: Solving Expressions
Equation is a mathematical statement that says two things are equal.
Solving equations mean finding the exact value of the variable that makes the expression true.
There are different methods used for different types of expression.

1. Linear Equations
Steps:1st Remove the brackets and collect all like terms on either side of the equation. (Note:
When moving terms from one side to the other, the sign changes)
2nd Simplify the like terms
3rd Remove all other terms beside the variable to the other side of the equation using
opposite operations
4th Find the unknown

Example 1.1: Solve for 𝑥 in the expression 2𝑥 + 3 = 𝑥 − 2

1st 2𝑥 − 𝑥 = −2 − 3
2nd 𝑥 = −5

Example 1.2: Solve for 𝑥 in 2𝑥 = 3(𝑥 + 6)

1st 2𝑥 = 3𝑥 + 18
2𝑥 − 3𝑥 = 18
nd
2 −𝑥 = 18
rd −𝑥 18
3 = −1
−1
4th 𝑥 = −18

2. Linear In-equations
In-equations are mathematical expressions that use symbols such as <, >, ≤, ≥.
In-equations are solved in the same way as equations and they usually have many solutions as
compared to equations.
However, when an in-equation is divided by -1, the inequality sign is reversed to make the
statement true.
Example: Solve 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑥 in the following linear in-equations

(a) -2𝑥 > 8 (b) 3𝑥 -4 ≤ 5

−2𝑥 8
= −2 > −2 = 3𝑥 − 4 + 4 ≤ 5 + 4
= 𝑥 < −4 = 3𝑥 ≤ 9
3𝑥 9
= ≤3

=𝑥 ≤3
EXERCISE:
Solve the following linear equations and in-equations.
1. 15 − 5𝑛 = 6 + 2𝑛
2. 2(3𝑥 − 1) = 5(2𝑥 − 6)
3. ℎ − 7 = 2 (ℎ − 4)
4. −3𝑥 ≥ −9
5. 5𝑥 + 4 > 𝑥 + 10
6. 6𝑥 − 5 > 7

1. 15 - 5n = 6 + 2n 2. 2 (3x - 1) = 5 (2x - 6) 3 h - 7 = 2 (h - 4)
-5 - 2n = 6 - 15 6x - 2 = 10x - 30 h - 7 = 2h - 8
-7n = -9 6x - 10x = -30 + 2 h - 2h = -8 + 7
n = 9/7 -4x = -28 -h = -1
x=7 h=1

4 -3x ≥ -9 5 5x + 4 > x + 10 6 6x − 5 > 7

-3x ÷ (-3) = -9 ÷ (-3) 5x - x > 10 - 4 6x > 7 + 5
x=3 4x > 6 6x > 12
x ≥ 3 x > 3/2 x>2
