Quadratic Functions
Your Turn:
Factorise the following expressions
1. 𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥) = 𝑥𝑥 2 + 2𝑥𝑥 − 8
f ( x) = x 2 + (a + b) x + ab
a=4
b = −2
f ( x) = ( x + 4)( x − 2)
2. 𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥) = 𝑥𝑥 2 − 25
f ( x) = x 2 + (a + b) x + ab
a=5
b = −5
f ( x) = ( x + 5)( x − 5)

Your Turn:
Find the roots of the following equations
1. 𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥) = 𝑥𝑥 2 + 3𝑥𝑥 − 8
− 3 ± 32 − 4 ×1× (−8)
x=
2
− 3 ± 41
x= = 1.70 or - 4.70
2
2. 𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥) = 𝑥𝑥 2 − 6𝑥𝑥 + 25
∆ = b 2 − 4ac = 36 − 4 ×1× 25
∆ = −64 < 0
∴ No real roots.
Practice:
i. Factorise the following quadratic equations:
a. 2𝑥𝑥 2 + 14𝑥𝑥 + 20
= 2𝑥𝑥 2 + (2 × 5 + 4)𝑥𝑥 + (4 × 5)
= (𝟐𝟐𝟐𝟐 + 𝟒𝟒)(𝒙𝒙 + 𝟓𝟓)
b. 𝑥𝑥 2 − 𝑥𝑥 − 42
= 𝑥𝑥 2 + (−7 + 6)𝑥𝑥 + (−7 × 6)
= (𝒙𝒙 − 𝟕𝟕)(𝒙𝒙 + 𝟔𝟔)
ii. Find the roots of the following quadratic functions either using factorisation
or the quadratic formula. Also graph the functions.
a. 2𝑥𝑥 2 + 14𝑥𝑥 + 20 = 0
= 2𝑥𝑥 2 + (2 × 5 + 4)𝑥𝑥 + (5 × 4)
= (2𝑥𝑥 + 4)(𝑥𝑥 + 5)
= 𝟐𝟐(𝒙𝒙 + 𝟐𝟐)(𝒙𝒙 + 𝟓𝟓)
To find roots,
Let 2(𝑥𝑥 + 2)(𝑥𝑥 + 5) = 0
∴ 2(𝑥𝑥 + 2) = 0 𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜 𝑥𝑥 + 5 = 0
∴ 𝒙𝒙 = −𝟐𝟐 𝒐𝒐𝒐𝒐 − 𝟓𝟓
Therefore, when plotting 𝑦𝑦 = 2𝑥𝑥 2 + 14𝑥𝑥 + 20, x-intercepts are:
(–2, 0) and (–5, 0).
2
iii. 5𝑥𝑥 2 + 4𝑥𝑥 − 1 = 0
= 5𝑥𝑥 2 + (5 × 1 − 1)𝑥𝑥 + (1 × −1)
= (𝟓𝟓𝟓𝟓 − 𝟏𝟏)(𝒙𝒙 + 𝟏𝟏)
To find roots,
Let (5𝑥𝑥 − 1)(𝑥𝑥 + 1) = 0
∴ 5𝑥𝑥 − 1 = 0 𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜 𝑥𝑥 + 1 = 0
𝟏𝟏
∴ 𝒙𝒙 = 𝒐𝒐𝒐𝒐 − 𝟏𝟏
𝟓𝟓
Simultaneous Equations
Your Turn:
1. Solve the following using the Substitution Method:
4𝑥𝑥 + 3𝑦𝑦 = 33 (1)
2𝑦𝑦 + 𝑥𝑥 = 17 (2)
From (2),
x = 17 − 2 y (3)
Substitute (3) into (1)
4(17 − 2 y ) + 3 y = 33
68 − 8 y + 3 y = 33
68 − 5 y = 33
68 − 5 y − 68 = 33 − 68
− 5 y = −35
− 5 y − 35
=
−5 −5
y=7
Substitute y = 7 into (3)
x = 17 − 2(7) = 3

(1) × 2 : 4 x+6 y=26 (3)
(2) × 3 : 9 x + 6 y = 36 ( 4)
(4) − (3) : 5 x = 10
x=2
From (1) :
2 × 2 + 3 y = 13
4 + 3 y = 13
3y = 9
y=3
