Laryngography Itis the Radiographic examination of the larynx and the hypopharynx. Laryngography is performed to diagnose structural or functional abnormalities of the larynx and hypopharynx, by administrative contrast media over the larynx and hypopharynx It is known as contrast Laryngography. It is a radiographic method to evaluate laryngeal disease. The examination also provides accessibility of vocal cord function, anatomy, and abnormality of the larynx and the hypopharynx Indication- Hoarseness of voice Acute laryngitis (inflammation of the vocal cords) Mass and lesions in the larynx and the hypopharynx. Vocal cord abnormalities. Contraindication- Hypersensitivity to iodinated contrast media Suspected perforation Suspected pregnancy Equipment- ¢ X-ray machine with the fluoroscopic unit with spot film device © Oily contrast media- Dinosil. ¢ Topical anesthesia spray ¢ Metal cannula. Procedure On the day of the examination, the patientremoves clothing and wears @ Hospital gown Remove jewelry from neck and denture from mouth before the examination. Place the patient in a sitting position. The topical anesthesia spray administrated in the larynx then the metal cannula is placed over the tongue advanced gently to the back of the tongue. After placing the cannula, 10 mi contrast media is administrated slowly through the metal cannula under fluoroscopy guidance. The contrast media gives a thin coating on larynx and hypopharynx. Spot films are taken in anterior-posterior, lateral projection during the inspiration phase Some exposure made in Phonation (sound producing by the opening and closing of the vocal cords) and Valsalva maneuver (exhalation against a closed airway by closing mouth and pinching nose) Aftercare- Patients will be allowed to leave the examination room after completion of the examination.
