A good habit to develop is practicing answers to common

questions you could face during a job interview. This is
especially important if you are a teenager and may not

you can give yourself a better chance at landing the job. In

this guide, we review questions that hiring managers could
ask teenagers during job interviews and provide some
sample answers.

Teen interview questions with sample

Below are some common questions teenagers face during

What are some of your biggest accomplishments?

Where do you see yourself in five years?
What are you learning in school that will help you with this
position?
Tell me about a problem you had recently and how you
solved it.
Do you have any questions about the job?

Why are you looking for a job?

Employers use this question to learn more about your

motivations. Think about your reasons for wanting
employment while you are still in school, then explain why

these motivations can make you a good employee.

Example: "I am looking for a job for two reasons. First, I
would like to gain more experience in this industry. I have
a passion for computers, so I would love the chance to
work with them and learn more about them after school
and on weekends. Second, I am looking to attend college
after I graduate from high school. Getting a part-time job
now would allow me to start saving up so that I can afford
classes in a few years."

Why do you want to work for us?

Employers could interview dozens of candidates for one

open position, and they want to make sure the person they

hire is interested in working for them. To answer this

question, learn more about the business before your
interview. Learn about the industry, customer base, size
and history. Pick a few factors that interest you and explain
why those factors make you want to work there.
Example: "I want to work for Premiere Marketing because
of the size and the services you offer. I am interested in
social media and online marketing, which seems like a
large part of what you offer. I'd like to either open up my
own marketing firm one day or become a full-time
freelance marketer. Getting the opportunity to work closely
with customers at a smaller firm like Premiere would give
me the hands-on experience I'm looking for."

Answers (With Tips)

What makes you the best candidate for this job?

The job market is competitive, so employers want to know

why they should hire you over someone else. Use this
question to sell yourself and highlight your best qualities.
As a teenager, you likely don't have a lot of work
experience yet, so you may need to rely on your
characteristics and high school achievements.
Example: "I believe I am the best person for the job
because of my passion and dedication. I have always
loved helping people out and working in a fast-paced

environment. From a young age, my parents instilled in me

the importance of hard work, which I think is reflected in
my high school transcript. I am a reliable person who can
be counted on to get my tasks done correctly and on time,
no matter how small or large it is."

What are some of your biggest accomplishments?

Employers like to see that you have strived for something

and achieved it. This shows your desire to improve
yourself. You may not have many achievements yet, so
you may need to be creative. If you don't have any awards
or honors just yet, find a way to highlight smaller
accomplishments. Use the STAR method to give a

compelling answer.
Example: "I would say one of my biggest
accomplishments was receiving a B+ on my Algebra 2
final exam last year. It may not sound like much, but I
struggled with algebra last year. I stayed after school
countless times with a tutor and spent hours doing
homework questions until I got them right. Throughout the
year, my grades weren't great, but I stuck with it. When I
received that B+ on my final, I felt a great sense of
accomplishment. I want to continue working hard in my
math classes to learn more."

Where do you see yourself in five years?

Hiring managers usually want candidates to have goals

and ambitions since they demonstrate hard work and
motivation. If you need to, consider where you think you'll
be next year, then the year after that and so on. This can
help you create a list of steps for where you plan to be in
five years. Try to relate this goal to why you want to work at
the company.
Example: "In five years, I would like to be close to
graduating with a Bachelor's Degree in Education. It's my
goal to become an elementary school teacher one day,
which is why I felt working at a daycare would provide me
with some experience working with young children."
Where do you see yourself in five years? The way you

respond determines a lot about whether your interviewer

sees you as a match with the company's mission and
goals. So I went to the Indeed career coaches, and I'm
here to share their four key tips on how to craft a
compelling and strategic statement that aligns you with the
company now and years in the future. Be sure to stick
around to the end where I'll give an extra added tip on how
to best highlight your value in an interview. All right. Let's
get to the good stuff.
My first tip is to present yourself as someone whose goals
are naturally aligned with those of the business. So a lot of
people say start with a job description. But in this case, I'd
recommend taking a company-first approach. So what that

means is to go ahead and do some research on the

company. Where has it been in the past? Where is it
going? How has it been growing? What's the trajectory
like? How are they meeting their goals?
And then, once you understand that larger picture, you
can better see the context of-- how is this role helping this
company to meet their objectives? Then when it comes to
answering this question in an interview, you can go ahead
and share something that's not just personal to you and
your life and growth, but also explain how your goals are
going to be helping a company meet theirs. If you've

updated on important career advice.

Tip two is to share specific goals for growth. This may
seem obvious, but people who want to grow are the
people that drive a company forward. Share areas where
you are hoping to learn or advance in your career and
then anything that you've done in order to actually make
that a reality, even if it's something as simple as reading a
book, or watching videos, attending a live webinar, or
maybe something more substantive like getting a
certification or doing additional training. By showing the
goal and then the action that you've taken to help achieve
it, you're proving yourself to be someone who not only has
goals but who's willing to adopt a growth mindset and bring

that goal into reality.

Tip number three, be genuine about your career
ambitions, but be tactful. Whenever possible, keep in mind
not only your goals when answering this question but how
those goals can serve the company's success. So it might
be really easy to say something like, gosh, I really wish that
I would be promoted to a leadership role five years from
now, or I want to be running a team five years from now.
Those are both really great things, and I just think there's a
little bit more of a diplomatic way to say them.
So you could instead frame that as, I hope that my track
record will have proven an increased drive toward
business goals by x number percent and that that will have

8 Interview Questions for Teens With Examples and Tips about:reader?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.indeed.com%2Fcareer-advice%2Finterviewing%2Fi...

demonstrated me to be a capable leader for this company.

Or, if you want to lead a team, you could say, I hope that I
will have proven great communication skills throughout my
time and that I will have been able to organize a group of
people who can help meet this business goal through our
work together.
By framing it in that way, you're showing that you're already
thinking about how your work can drive the company
forward and that your goals really can serve as additional
momentum for the trajectory of the company. If leadership
is something that you're interested in, awesome. We have
a whole video all about how to be a great leader in the

Tip number four is to focus on your proven value. All right,

this may seem a little counter-intuitive because where do
you see yourself in five years is a very future-looking
question. And to be clear, I'm not suggesting not to
mention the future at all, but I am suggesting that you start
out your response with something that's more grounded in
the growth you've shown in your past and your former
background for even applying to this role.
And I do that for two reasons. The first, is because it's
another opportunity to talk about the qualifications that set
you up for success in this role, which is something we
always look for in interviews. Any time we can sort of slip in
the fact that we have these qualifications and experiences

15 de 27 03/12/2021 02:18 p. m.
8 Interview Questions for Teens With Examples and Tips about:reader?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.indeed.com%2Fcareer-advice%2Finterviewing%2Fi...

that really align with the needs of the role, we want to do

that. So it's just another opportunity to mention those
credentials.
But then secondly, by demonstrating, hey, here's where I
started in the past and here's how far I have gotten, you
sort of demonstrate that you're already on a growth
trajectory. You're pretty much saying, hey, I'm a sure bet.
I've been growing like this in the past. I set these goals, I
achieved them, and now, with these next goals, my past
momentum fully supports me getting there too. Obviously,
when it comes to growth and all of those business goals,
companies don't really want to take a gamble. They want
to know that the person that they are bringing on is going

16 de 27 03/12/2021 02:18 p. m.
8 Interview Questions for Teens With Examples and Tips about:reader?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.indeed.com%2Fcareer-advice%2Finterviewing%2Fi...

to already be in the habit of setting and fulfilling those

goals. So you're just saying, I've been doing this for a
while, so you can count on me.
I promised you one tip at the beginning that will really
boost your value when you're in an interview room, and I'm
going to share it with you now, which is that, if given the
opportunity, state that you would like to become a subject
matter expert and to lend that expertise to others in the
company as it grows. The reason why I suggest this is a
very simple guiding principle, which is that, scarcity is
valuable. The more honed in, the more irreplaceable you
can be to a company, if you have really particular set of
skills, that's going to be seen as a long-term asset that

17 de 27 03/12/2021 02:18 p. m.
8 Interview Questions for Teens With Examples and Tips about:reader?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.indeed.com%2Fcareer-advice%2Finterviewing%2Fi...

they want to hold on to. If you can state that you really aim
to-- as a result of their investment in your career-- become
an asset that can offer specific expertise that maybe other
people can't, that's something that's extremely compelling
and then shows also a level of personal ambition on your
part that simultaneously drives the goals of the business.
So here's what a example of that kind of statement might
sound like. I'll reference it here. "My co-worker Evan asked
for my help running a few reports to gather survey data. As
I guided him through the steps to run the reports, I also
showed him how to filter data and run projections. By
showing my skills in data reporting with Evan, he became
more confident in his work and is now a stronger

contributor to his team." So again, if you can compound

the value that you offer by showing that it can not only be
just a great performance on your part but leveling up the
performances of those around you, that's a really big
impact to offer a large organization.
Let's do a quick recap of the five tips I've offered to help
you successfully answer where you see yourself in the
next five years of your career. First is to present yourself
as someone who is strategically aligned with the company
both now and in the future. Second is to share specific but
realistic goals for growth. Third is to be authentic but tactful
about your ambitions. Fourth is to focus on your proven
value. And fifth is to perhaps mention an interest in being a

As a teenager, the biggest thing on your resume right now

is likely your experiences in high school. An employer may

ask you to name some specific things you are learning in
school that can translate over to the job since you don't
have relative work experience yet. Think about what skills
you need for the position and how you're learning these
things in school.
Example: "One course I am currently taking in school is
public speaking. In it, we are learning how to give
presentations and speeches, which involves practicing our
communication skills. Through this course, I have become
more confident when I need to talk to or in front of others,
which I believe will help me as a camp counselor."

Tell me about a problem you had recently and how you

solved it.

Problem-solving is a big part of any job. Employers want

team members who can solve problems on their own
without having to ask for help every time they encounter
an issue. If you can demonstrate your ability to assess and
solve a problem, it can make you a stronger candidate.
Think about a problem you may have had either in school
or with someone else or at a previous job, then go into the
strategies you used to solve it.
Example: "One issue I had recently was during a team
project in my history class. We each had our section of a
presentation to work on, but I noticed a few of the other
members were not getting their work done as quickly. The

deadline was approaching, and I felt that our finished

product would suffer if they did not get started soon.
To help, I gathered the group together and discussed the
state of the project. I also offered to help with other
sections of the project so that we could finish on time. In
the end, we were able to complete everything and receive
a good grade."

can not only help you decide if it's a good fit for you but
also that you did your research. Before the interview, make
a list of questions that you want to know about the job. At
the end of the interview, ask any questions that you didn't
get an answer to during the interview.
Example: "I have a few questions that I don't believe were
covered during the interview. What's the day to day like for
this role? How big is the team that I'll be working with?
What are the next steps?"

Here are a few additional tips you can use if you're a

teenager going in for an interview:

Prepare beforehand

The best thing you can do is plenty of preparation before

the interview. Practice answers to common questions in
front of a mirror or with a friend or family member. Make
sure you have a solid resume printed out that you can
bring with you. Also, research the business and your role,
and bring any questions you may have about them.

Make use of what you have

You may not have a lot of work experience to talk about,

so consider getting creative. Talk about your
characteristics, your school experiences and any
extracurricular activities, like sports or clubs. Employers

aren't expecting you to have a wealth of experience yet, so

don't be afraid to talk a lot about high school.

Try to relax

Interviews can be stressful, so do your best to relax. Get a

good night's sleep, and make sure you give yourself plenty
of time to get to the interview early. Take the time to form
clear, concise answers.

Dress appropriately

First impressions are important during an interview.
