Self-Introduction
5. That is a map of India.

8.6 -0-EXPLANATION

-0-5 I ':'n', 'this', indicates a thing/things near the speaker, not near the listener.

'-rn', 'that', indicates a thing/things near the listener, not near the speaker.

'&>;11;,also meaning 'that', indicates a thing/things away from both the

speaker and the listener.

-0-6. 'v\t=-t::2:~T' and '~'~-rj ~"ic'Lt=-' are expressions used

before one starts eating and after one finishes eating, respectively. This is
to express gratitude to whoever has provided the food.

-0-7 Particle '7.p'is used at the end ofa sentence to change the sentence into
a question.

Ex: ':'nli Iflve-To This is a book.

-rnli Iflve-T7J"o Is that a book?

Note: There is no question mark (?) in Japanese. All sentences end with a '0 '

-0-8 Particle id.

Like 7J\ id. too is a sentence- final particle. It is used by the speaker
seeking agreement with the listener and normally the listener agrees with
her/him. It corresponds to question tags in English such as "Isn't it?",
"Don't you (think so)?"

Ex: ':'nli -1/' r-"O) ~Te-Tid.o This is a map of India, isn't it?

-0-9 If the subject is understood from the context (previous sentences), then it
is normally omitted. (See example sentences 2 and 3 in unit 8)
