Request for Comments (RFCs)

The Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) develops and maintains the
protocols and standards that govern communication on the Internet and
private networks.

The IETF is an open community, divided into multiple working groups.

Each working group is further separated into areas, which are governed by
an area director.

Working groups develop Requests for Comments (RFCs), which contain

all technical information relating to each specific protocol and standard.
Updates to protocols/standards are often released as new RFCs, replacing
obsolete (and eventually retired) documents.

The IETF homepage contains comprehensive information concerning both

the organization itself (http://www.ietf.org/home.html) and the individual
RFCs (http://www.ietf.org/rfc.html).

The following list is by no means comprehensive. In most cases, the

following list includes only the most recent RFC for each standard/protocol.

Common RFCs

• RFC 768 – User Datagram Protocol (UDP)

• RFC 791 – Internet Protocol (IP)
• RFC 792 – Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP)
• RFC 793 – Transmission Control Protocol (TCP)
