two variables.

determine if that relationship is significant.

textbook).

2. Which variable should be the dependent variable, and which should

be the independent variable? Why?
For us, we consider the number of pages independent variable
while the cost or price being the dependent variable due to some
instances that I customer buys a book that is thick it is expensive.
Maybe the over-all cost of a single book was based on it due to the
increasing number of materials that is needed to make a book

3. Graph “pages” vs. “cost.” Plot the points on the graph

4. Analyze the Data. Label both axes with words. Scale both axes.
5. Write the linear equation, rounding to four decimal places.
a. Y= a + bX = 4.78 + .03(40) = 5.9900
b. Y= a + bX = 8.02 + .08(304) = 16.9900
c. Y= a + bX = 20.27 + -0.03(192) = 13.9500
6. Calculate the following:
a. Bo = 12.19 - .03(245.6) = 4.78
b. B1 = Σ ( 40−245.6 ) ( 5.99−12.19 ) 42271.36 = .03
c. correlation (r) = 0.6845
d. n = 10
e. equation: y = 4.78 + .03(X)
f. Is the correlation significant? Why or why not? (Answer in
complete sentences.) (Show your computations).
i. Yes, it is significant, because a correlation value of 0.7
between two variables would indicate that a significant
and positive relationship exists between the two.
ii. Computation
o X Values
 ∑ = 2456
 Mean = 245.6
o ∑(X - Mx)2 = SSx = 250630.4
o Y Values
 ∑ = 121.86
 Mean = 12.186
o ∑(Y - My)2 = SSy = 229.457
o X and Y Combined
 N = 10
 ∑(X - Mx)(Y - My) = 5190.944
o R Calculation
 r = ∑((X - My)(Y - Mx)) / √((SSx)(SSy))
 r = 5190.944 / √((250630.4)(229.457))
 = 0.6845

• The student will calculate and construct the line of best fit between
two variables.
• The student will evaluate the relationship between two variables to
determine if that relationship is significant.

1. Collect the Data

Find a reputable source that provides information on total fuel efficiency
(in miles per gallon) and weight (in pounds) of new model cars with
automatic transmissions. We will use this data to determine the
relationship, if any, between the fuel efficiency of a car and its weight. You
can use other unit like kms per liter for fuel efficiency and kgs for the
weight.
2. Construct a table for weight and fuel efficiency

3. Which variable should be the dependent variable, and which should

be the independent variable? Why?
a. For us, the independent variable is the weight and fuel
efficiency will be the dependent variable. Weight is an important
factor in how much fuel it will consume. The heavier the vehicle,
the more energy it needs to get moving. Extra weight also
increases a vehicle’s rolling resistance, which is a force that
resists forward motion produced as the wheels roll over the
road. This means that reducing weight is a very effective way to
lower a vehicle’s fuel consumption.
4. By hand, do a scatterplot of “weight” vs. “fuel efficiency”. Plot the
points on graph paper. Label both axes with words. Scale both axes
accurately.
5. Analyze the Data

1. Calculate the following: (Show your calculations)
a Bo = 244.5711
b b.B1 = .6700
c correlation r = -0.7489
d n = 15
e equation: ŷ = 244.5711 + 0.67(X)
a. Computation
i. X Values
∑ = 238
Mean = 15.867
∑(X - Mx)2 = SSx = 97.733

Y Values
∑ = 55188
Mean = 3679.2
∑(Y - My)2 = SSy = 4168578.4
X and Y Combined
N = 15
∑(X - Mx)(Y - My) = -15116.6

R Calculation
r = ∑((X - My)(Y - Mx)) / √((SSx)(SSy))
r = -15116.6 / √((97.733)(4168578.4)) = -0.7489
2. Sketch the regression line on the same axes as your scatter plot.
