Undergraduate Student Should Write a Thesis for Their Degree

Before completing a study program in a certain field of study, an undergraduate or master
student needs to write a scientific paper in the form of a thesis. Why is writing a thesis / thesis
necessary and required by almost all universities? This is some reason why undergraduate
students should write a thesis for completing their degree.

First, Undergraduate student should write a thesis for their degree because undergraduate
student as academics will be considered contributing to science when they write a thesis. A
scientific work must come with reference to the research results. A good scientific work must
have a level of originality or new findings so that it can enrich science. There are a lot of new
research that found by undergraduate researcher and one of example, George Shields, published
a paper on hydrogen bonding in the Journal of Computational Chemistry in 1993 with then Lake
Forest College undergraduate Marcus Jurema, which has been cited 174 times to date.

Second, Thesis can develop student’s skill. Based on article that published by David S.
Rovnyak and George C. Shields titled "How Undergraduate Research Drives Science Forward",
these experiences are widely recognized to build critical-thinking skills, foster a foundation for
the scientific process and create hands-on classroom experiences. The undergraduate research
experience will become one of several experiences that can impact the future career choices of
undergraduate students.

Third, writing thesis can increase the ability in writing for undergraduate student. Writing
a thesis definitely requires writing skills. Undergraduate students are also required to explain the
results of their research in words. Employers often prefer students with a thesis paper in their
portfolio, because it shows their gained writing skills, authoritative awareness of the field, and
ambition to learn. Defending your thesis will also fine-tune critical communication and public speaking
skills, which can be applied in any career.

Eventhough thesis has many benefit for undergraduate student, many people disagree that student
should make a thesis for their degree. Of course it isn’t true because thesis is really important to find out
the ability and understanding of undergraduated students in the field they are engaged in. Therefore
writing a thesis is indispensable for the completion of the undergraduate for students.
