Case Context:
MRD was an internal department set up by IndCo in June 2016, with Anand as
its head. The department was tasked with the acquisition of new mining assets
for IndCo, and was also responsible for optimizing current mining resources in
alignment with IndCo’s capacity growth plans.
Anand would like to conduct a training program for his team (MRD) that would
help the team

Various factors that training managers consider in assessing the training needs are:
• Employee’s competency gap with respect to present role
• Employee’s prior qualifications and experience
• History of training programs attended
• Results from the previous performance evaluation
• Planned changes to the employee’s responsibilities
• Department’s annual business plan
• New organizational initiatives

2. What are the decisions, tasks and activities that a training
manager plan and execute when conceptualizing, designing,
and implementing an effective training program?

The various decisions, tasks and activities that a training manager plan and
execute when conceptualizing, designing, and implementing an effective
training program are:
• The training manager starts with understanding the specific requirements of
the program
• Deciding whether the training would be conducted be in-house or external
• Deciding on the training schedule
• Deciding on the training Cost
• Finalizing various logistical and locational requirements 5

3. When deciding whether to complete a training program in house
or outsource some aspects of it, what factors and perspectives
should a training manager consider? (Discuss the reasons for
choosing outsourced versus in-house training)

Factors involved in choosing outsourced vs. in-house training programs are


• Availability of a competent trainer for the required course within the
organization
• Cost of hiring an external trainer and budget availability
• Availability of trainer for the dates the training is proposed
• Venue of the training program

4. What is your assessment of MRD's requirements? Based on the
information provided, do you think training program will meet MRD’s
requirements?

• MRD’s Requirements for the training program were very specific. As per
Anand, the training should aim to improve team member’s skills of
thinking strategically, scenario planning, working together as a virtual
team, knowledge management, understanding market and regulatory
trends, and strategic negotiation
• The intended training program might fall short of the mark as Pathak
doesn’t have any experience in mining industry, thus he is oblivious to the
day to day scenarios and challenges faced by the people in the industry.
Even though Anand is going to provide questions for the team to solve ,
Pathak might not be able to judge the correctness of the responses
