Mehta’s Dilemma
Training needs assessment
• Impacts the usefulness of training for the trainees, as
well as eventual performance benefits the organizations
gains from training.

• Affects the quality of the training program and the

effectiveness of training function.

• It leads to the identification of the objectives of training

program, its intended audience or eventual beneficiaries
(the trainees) and their improvement needs.
Designing Effective Corporate Training
Programs
• Training Manager usually begins by trying to map the needs
onto an existing (standard) program that is on offer.

• If sufficient overlap exists between the training needs and an

existing program, then the manager is likely to offer that
training program as a solution to internal customer

• If existing program cannot satisfy the needs, the training

manager will likely to design a customized training program
Factors to be considered while
determining a training program’s design
• Duration of the program
• Format used
• Chosen dates and venue
• Use of particular pedagogy
• Class size
• Class composition
Managing Corporate Training

• Understanding the entire portfolio of programs on offer
from training department
• Gap analysis
• Designing new training programs
• Keeping track of evolving business needs
• Networking with faculty members (in house and external)
• Learning about faculty members of their skills and areas
of expertise
• Playing the role of Project Manager at
times
• Ensuring all tasks associated with
implementation of any training program
• Choosing an appropriate training instructor
• Format of training program
In-house versus Outsourced training
delivery

Should organizations employ full-time

trainers at all, or should they always rely on
external faculty for training purposes?
Reasons for choosing outsourced
v/s in-house training
Outsourced Training In-house Training

1. Cost considerations Relative costs

2. Lack of internal capability Core competence

3. Access to best practices and Specific and idiosyncratic training

talent
4. Internal trainers (although Capability and capacity constraints
capable) but unavailable
5. Focused approach End-to-end solution

6. Measurement and accountability Control issues

7. Organizational politics Return on investment
