F-002 CEMENT TESTING – HYDRAULIC CEMENT DENSITY F-002-01-00
1. Objective:
The objective of this document is:
a. To make a step by step procedure to prepare and test cement.
b. To determine the density of the cement according to ASTM C188-16
2. Scope:
This test method covers the procedure for determination of density of cement, which is defined as the mass
of a unit volume of the solids.
3. Definitions:
5. Sample size:
The sample used for test are 100g.
6. Test procedure:
1. Take the 100g of cement and put it in the oven at (105 Co) to remove wetness from the sample.
2. Fill the flask with kerosine (density ˃ 0.73 g/mL) at 23± 2 Co to a point between 0-1 mL mark.
3. If necessary dry the inside of flask above the liquid level.
4. Weigh the flask containing the liquid and record the mass to the nearest 0.05g “A”.
5. Immersed the flask in constant temperature water bath for sufficient periods of time and record the
reading (V1) of the liquid height.
6. Let the cement cooling to the room temperature and weigh about 64g of cement.
7. Introduce the quantity of cement in small increments at the same temperature as the liquid.
8. Take care to avoid splashing and see that the cement does not adhere to the inside of the flask.
9. Weigh the flask containing the liquid and the cement and record the mass to the nearest 0.05g “B”.
10. Place the stopper in the flask and roll the flask in an inclined position to free entrapped air from the
cement and liquid.
11. Immersed the flask in constant temperature water bath for sufficient periods of time and record the
reading (V2) of the liquid height.

7. Clarifications:
a. Calculate the results to three decimal places, round to the nearest 0.01 “g/cm3”.
b. Specific gravity of cement = Cement density / water density at 4Co.
c. The results of two properly conducted tests should not differ by more than 0.03 “g/cm3”.
