CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

“Academic”, it is used to describe things that relate to the work done in schools,
colleges, and universities, especially work which involves studying and reasoning rather
than practical or technical skill. While Academic Performance is the extent to which a
Student, Teacher or institution has achieved their long term educational goals or in
other word academic performance is your performance that you do in school. (Reverso
dictionary)

Stress is defined as a condition that arises from the actual perception of the
imbalance of an individual’s requirements/abilities for a particular task. It is a common
and inevitable component in the lives of every individual, regardless race or cultural
background (Newth,2011).The stress issues seem to be more widespread than ever and
many of the reason is the overload in work, cramming in school project and insecurities.
Another view of the effect of stress on the body was presented by Lazarus and Folk man
(1984), in that they state stress is more than a response to environmental demands, but
it also related to personal perception.

On the other hand, The ABM is the one of the difficult Strand in Senior High School
Even before the start of classes, the researchers have heard other ABM students to
state how challenging can be this strand and most of the student of this strand
encounter different types of stress. Meanwhile, in the Philippines, particularly in Saint
Theresa’s College, (Algoet,2003) presented that the greatest number of students
problem that caused stressed was found in areas of personal adjustments, school life
and the financial status. College students were facing academic, social and other
stresses such as finances and how to cope with them. The common stress most college
students
face is the from the workload that is common in a higher education system.

This is the major challenge, and you will be facing without the close guidance you may have
previously enjoyed from a teacher or parent, social stress seems to be more prominent with
underclassmen leaving home and there support structure from home but can affect any college
students. Most students find that the number one caused of stress for them is financially, trying
to juggle a full load and work full time to support and for other students pay for school.
Although students have different courses, they encounter almost all the same problems and all
of them experience different stress levels. Yet, there are speculations and perceptions that there
are groups which are more prone to stress. Further research found that 32% of accountants feel
stressed in their day –to-day life and a further 17% have been forced to take time off due to
stress.
Research Objective

According to the most high school students, their greatest academic stressors include
test, grade, homeworks, and academic and achievement expectations and parental
pressure.School related stresses include inadequate instructional methods, teacher
student relationships, heavy academic workload, poor physical classroom
environments, inability to balance one’s leisure time with school, and disorganization
surrounding academic assignments and schedules. Additional sources consists of a
struggle to meet academic standards, worries about time management and concerns
over grades and scores.

The mental health of students, especially in terms of academic stress and its

impact, hasbecome serious issue among school and policy makers because of the
increasing incidence of suicides among students across the globe. The lancet report
states that ,india has the world’s highest suicide rates among the youth.

Excessive levels of academic stress can result in an increased prevalence of

psychological and physical problems like depression, anxiety, nervousness and stress
related disorders, which in turn can affect their academic result.
