Preface

This workbook focuses on Distinguishing types of Speech Style as one of the Most
Essential Learning Competencies (MELCs) in Grade 11 English. This learning material was
patterned on Bloom’s Taxonomy Instructional Design wherein learning activities were aligned
with the identified objectives and were sequenced according to their level of difficulty considering
the learners’ needs, interest and abilities.

This is especially made to enhance the students’ knowledge and skills in relation
to the identified learning competency. In this very competitive world that we are in right now,
effective communication is very crucial. Knowing the appropriate manner and style in conversing
with other people is highly encouraged in order not to sound arrogant and rude. Also, this
workbook is designed to help the students become better and responsible speakers. Through this
workbook, students will engage in fun and interesting learning activities and answer varied
exercises and tasks to help them gain mastery of the target competency which will enable them to
effectively use the English Language in listening, speaking, reading and writing.

Short Discussion of the Topic

Defining Speech Styles

According to Martin Joos (1976), speech style is the form of language that the speaker
uses which is characterized by the degree of formality from the most formal to the least formal.

There are five types of speech styles according to Joos. These are: Frozen, Formal, Consultative,
Casual and Intimate. Each of these speech styles dictates what appropriate language or vocabulary
should be used during communication.

1. Frozen Style

Frozen style is the most formal communicative style that is usually used during respectful events
and ceremonies. It does not require feedback from the audience. The language use in frozen style
is fixed and relatively static. Based from the term “frozen” alone, it means it remains unchanged.
If there are changes, just only revisions and careful development of thoughts and other technical
writing are considered.

Example: The Lord’s Prayer, Preamble of the Constitution, Marriage Vows, etc.

2. Formal Style

Formal style is a speech style usually used in formal situation where there is a least of shared
background and the communication in this style is largely one way with little or no feedback from
the audience. Formal speech style is intended to share information. Usually in formal style, what
the speaker says is something that has been prepared. Meaning, it is scripted. Also, formal speech
style conforms to establish professional rules and standards and avoids using slang terminology.

Examples: graduation speeches, welcome addresses, meeting and announcements.

3. Consultative Style

Consultative speech style is used in semi-formal communication and it happens in two way
communication. It is basically an unplanned speech since the speaker uses the participation and
feedback of the listener. From the word consultative, there is an expert to consult to. If the
information presented by the speaker is insufficient or unclear, the listener may ask for elaborations
or clarifications.

Example: Communication between teacher-student, doctor and patient, and employer-employee.

4. Casual Style

Casual speech style is used in informal situations and language. There is free and easy participation
of both speaker and listener. Also, slang is quite often used in this style. Casual speech style is a
type of speech used between peers and friends.

Example: Conversation with friends, families, chat rooms, and vlogs.

5. Intimate Style

Intimate speech style is used in conversations between people who are very close. It uses personal
language codes, certain endearments and slangs.

Examples: Conversation between boyfriend/girlfriend, married couples and very close friends.
