Tutorial 8 Building Environmental Assessment

1. Discuss “Why do we need green buildings?”

2. Discuss “the benefits for adopting BEAM Plus?”

3. Calculate the following two renewable energy systems for earning at least 3 credits under
BEAM Plus NB Eu 6 Renewable Energy Systems for a 30-storey office building with an annual
energy consumption 5,000,000 kWh and 1,000 m2 building footprint.
Renewable energy systems:
a) Wind turbine system: calculate the number of wind turbines used? (Assume the output
power of wind turbine is 10kW, capacity factor is 30%)
b) Solar system: calculate the minimum percentage of the building footprint covered by PV
panels? (The rated power of PV panel is 120W/m2, the equivalent hours of full sun is 4.5
hours)

4. Conduct a carbon audit for the facility management service provider of a hotel in year 2009.
Information gathered from energy audit, bills and operation record (items table) is as follows:
Item Record
Location: Kowloon Fei Ngo Shan (served by China Light Power)
Total electricity consumption 12,263,800 kWh
Town gas consumption 259650 units
Fresh water consumption in restaurants 83550 m3.
Fresh water consumption for other commercial use 91750 m3.
Diesel oil consumption for emergency generator 514 L
Amount of refrigerant HCFC-123 refilled 563 kg
Amount of refrigerant HFC-134a refilled 323 kg
Amount of paper purchased by management office 2807 kg
(Estimated) Amount of paper recycled in mgt office 7030 kg
Mileage run by the hotel’s shuttle bus (24 seaters diesel-type minibus) 432km (per day)a

a. Diesel consumption for minibus = 11L per 100 km mileage. Assume there is no alternative public
transport in Fei Ngo Shan.

(The hotel management has to arrange shuttle service for customers and staff as there is lack of public
transport at the hotel location).

Please report the carbon emission for scope 1, scope 2 and scope 3 separately, and also report the total
carbon emission for the whole hotel.

Equation for calculating CO2 equivalent is shown in Table 1, Page 3 (Source: Guidelines to Account for
and Report on Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Removals for Buildings (Commercial, Residential or
Institutional Purposes) in Hong Kong.)

Common refrigerants and Global Warming Potential (GWP) are shown in Page 4.
