CIVICS 2

TOPIC: WE CARE FOR THE NATURAL RESOURCES IN OUR COMMUNITY; WATER (

COMPETENCIES/ OBJECTIVES:

At the end of the lesson, you should be able to:

a) Describe natural resources and the major products of your community; and
b) Value the importance of caring for our natural resources.

Let’s Start!

NATURAL RESOURCES: WATER

Bodies of water give us many things. Like landforms, our bodies of water are also rich in natural
resources.
The following are some of the benefits we get from natural resources from water forms:

1. Water for humans, animals, and plants

➢ We need clean drinking water. We need at least eight glasses of water every day. Animals and
plants also need water. Animals drink water in the rivers and creeks. Plants need water to live and
bear fruits.
2. Food
➢ Water forms are a great source of food. Shrimp, fish, squid, seaweed, and shellfish come from
the water. Those must be part of our regular meal for us to become healthy.
3. Transportation
➢ Big water forms such as rivers, seas, and oceans are used as modes of transportation for ships,
boats, barges, and many more.
4. Salt
➢ Seawater, if sun-dried and processed, becomes salt. Salt is an important mineral that gives taste
to our food.
5. Other treasures
➢ It is in water forms that pearls and seashells are found. These are considered treasures. They
canbemade into earrings, necklaces, vases, decorations and many more.

Here are some examples of products from bodies of water:

The hydroelectric power plant uses energy from

water. It supplies energy to houses, roads, and other structures.
Angat Dam is an example of a hydroelectric power plant.

TAKING CARE OF NATURAL RESOURCES

Natural resources may be lost if we abuse them. Minerals are

not replaced that is why mining companies that mine them are
regulated by the government. Landforms and water forms may also get
damaged if we are careless. Natural resources that can be replaced
must be replaced.

We need to be intelligent in getting and using natural resources. Let us take

care of them. Let us use them properly. They will not easily be lost if we all do our
part and be responsible.

Here are some reminders on how to care of our natural resources:

A. LAND RESOURCES:
✓ Avoid cutting down trees. Replace trees that must be cut down with seedlings.
✓ Do not hunt animals that are in to danger of becoming extinct. Let them propagate.
✓ Feed pets on time. Let them rest. Never hit them.

✓ Organic farming is a method of farming where farmers use natural fertilizers, pesticides, and
insecticides. Organic fertilizer is good for the health and the environment.
✓ Illegal mining in rivers and mountains must be stopped. People must also be vigilant against illegal
mining of other minerals in their communities. In legal mining sites, the safety of all the workers
must be ensured. Miners must also protect the environment.

B. WATER RESOURCES:
✓ When fishing, use fish nets with regular holes so as to avoid
catching small fish. Do not use dynamites. All fish, including the
very young ones and the eggs, get killed unnecessarily when we
use dynamites. The corals will also get destroyed.
✓ Allow fish to live and propagate in protected areas like coral
reefs and mangroves. Fishing in protected areas should be
avoided. Also, do not throw wastes and poisonous chemicals in
rivers and other water forms.

LET’S REMEMBER!

✓ Our natural resources are important to us, hence,

everyone has the responsibility to care and use them
wisely.
