Invitational Speech Outline

Name: Rebekah Davidson

Date: 3-7-21
Topic reviewed: Invitational Speech

Topic: Social Media

Purpose: To invite.
Specific purpose: To invite my audience to reduce their time on social media
Thesis: In this speech, I will invite you to reduce the amount of time that you
spend on social media.

Introduction: (Should be :30 to :36 seconds of your speech.)

I. Attention: According to an article by McLean Hospital with Harvard
Medical School, social media can lead to anxiety and depression. (Something
catchy. My example is fictitious and used for example sake only. You need
factual information.)
II. Relate topic to audience: In this speech, I will invite you to reduce the
amount of time that you spend on social media.
(Insert thesis statement here.)
III. Credibility: I am a social media user and performed research on how it
affects mental health. (Why did you pick this topic?)
IV. Preview: In this speech I will discuss the basics of social media, how it
affects our mental health, and then hold a discussion. (List, in order, the main
points of the body of your speech.)

Body (Should be 4-5 minutes of information AND THEN 3-4 minutes of

discussion.)
I. Main Point: The Basics of Social Media (Directly from your preview.)
A. Interactions
1. Posts
2. Likes, Comments, & Followers
B. Content
1. Types of Content
2. How the Content Keeps Users Scrolling

II. Main Point: How It Affects Our Mental Health (Directly from your preview.)
A. Issues
1. Levels of Self-Esteem
2. Anxiety and Depression
B. Results from Solutions
1. Self-Monitoring
2. Rating Feelings When Using or Not Using Social Media

III. Main Point: Discussion (Directly from your preview.)

A. Now that I have given you this information, what do you think about
reducing your amount of time on social media? (Use your THESIS STATEMENT
as an OPEN ENDED question to encourage discussion to get the conversation
started.)
B. How does social media make you feel if you spend a large amount of
time on it? (Good idea to have a back-up question in case the discussion runs
dry.)
C. How would you compare interactions with others on social media to
those that are in-person or over a phone call? (Good idea to have a back-up
question in case the discussion runs dry.)

Conclusion (Should be :30 to :36 seconds of your speech.)

I. Summary: In this speech I discussed the basics of social media, how it
affects our mental health, and then held a discussion. (Just like the PREVIEW
but in past tense.)
II. Closing: In the past, I have taken breaks of several days or more from social
media. I personally felt that my mind was more clear by doing this. If you feel that
reducing your time on social media may be something that you would like to try,
perhaps you will see this benefit as well.

Audience analysis information:
In the space below discuss how you have tailored your speech for this particular
audience. Consider discussing specific choices you’ve made regarding your speech
organization, language choices, sources, delivery style, visual aids, etc.
1. Describe your audience demographics and explain how you have adapted your
speech for this audience.
My audience consists of mostly males, but also has a few females. They mostly seem
to consist of students that are of high school or college age with a few that may be a bit
older. I think it is safe to assume that most, if not all, of my audience members use
social media. I have adapted my speech for this audience by giving a brief explanation
of social media so that everyone understands it and then explaining how it can affect
those who spend large amounts of time on it.
2. Describe your audience interests and knowledge toward this topic and explain
how you have adapted your speech to their interest and knowledge level.
Answer…My audience appears to be very interested in my speech based on my
discussion post responses. As most of my audience members are of the age that use
various social media apps, I can assume that they are knowledgeable on how it works. I
have adapted my speech for the audience by giving a brief explanation on how social
media works so that those who may be unfamiliar can better understand the topic. I will
also include a few other points that are not commonly known to social media users to
keep the interest of those who are already familiar with it.
3. Describe your audience psychological expectations (values, attitudes and beliefs)
toward your topic and how you have adapted your speech based on your understanding
of their psychological expectations.
Answer…My audience will likely have favorable views towards social media. Some may
have never considered reducing their time on it. I have adapted my speech so that I do
not imply that social media is completely wrong as this would likely turn my audience
off. Instead, I will mention how it does have some benefits and then explain the reasons
why I would like to invite them to reduce the amount of time spent on it.
