In your presentation group, each member first completes the individual HW7 task (see
below). After completing the tasks individually, share your answers as a group, discuss and
note your team’s observations on what made the presentations successful/effective from the
audience’s standpoint.
Your group submission file should include:
Part 1: Original responses of group members to the individual task.
Part 2: A paragraph of group reflection on what made the presentations successful/effective.
HW7 individual task
Step 1: Choose an informative presentation on the topic of your interest (can also be related
to your studies, individual project, etc. - choose something useful!). Condition: NOT a TED
talk! Remember to include a link to the video.
Step 2: Watch and answer the following questions (refer to the required Cheesebro reading to
do this):
1. What is the central idea of this presentation?
2. What main points does the presentation develop? State them in complete
sentences in parallel form.
3. What type of attention-grabber does the speaker use? How effective is it? How
does the speaker create the need for the information?

Name of video: Brené Brown on Empathy
Link: Brené Brown on Empathy
1. What is the central idea of this presentation?
The center of this video is telling the difference between empathy and sympathy. By giving a
variety of examples through vivid animation, the video aims to help the audience to gain a
deeper insight into what is the definition of sympathy and empathy and how it can impact on
communicating with people.

2. What main points does the presentation develop?

● Giving explanation and the definition of sympathy and empathy.
● Explaining why it is important and giving examples on how people can show empathy
through words and action.
● Give examples of words that people should avoid when confronting.

3. What type of attention-grabber does the speaker use? How effective is it? How
does the speaker create the need for the information?
The video provides a vivid animation to demonstrate the speaker's idea. This helps to grab the
audience's attention and make them focus more on the presentation. The speaker is also fluent
in using a change in tone of voice, which helps the talk become less boring and make the
audience have more interest to hear the rest.

4. What are your reactions to this presentation (benefits and objections)?

By watching this presentation, I have gained more knowledge in how to comfort people and
what should be avoided. The main objection I have is that the video is too short, only 2
minutes, so the information the presentation contains may not be complete and deep.

Phan Phuong Anh:

Name of the video: The power of diverse thinking
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E5UHfcwal0M
1. What is the central idea of this presentation?
This presentation's main thesis is the significance of cognitive variety for creativity and
problem-solving. The speaker argues that while people are attracted to others who think like
them, teams with a varied range of cognitive backgrounds are more likely to produce creative
ideas and real collective intelligence.

2. What main points does the presentation develop? State them in complete sentences in
parallel form.
● More ideas and solutions result from cognitive diversity. The speaker uses an example
of a homogeneous group of people producing a smaller amount of ideas than a varied
group to demonstrate this point.
● . The speaker draws attention to the psychological propensity to find connections with
others and the risk that this propensity poses in terms of reducing collective
intelligence. The temptation might cause overconfidence in faulty solutions and
perpetuate preconceptions.
● Cognitive variety is crucial for coming up with workable answers as issues get more
complicated. The speaker makes the point that in the future, cognitive variety will be
essential for gaining a competitive edge.
● The talk clarifies the myth that the best strategy is to collaborate with people who
share your values. The speaker argues that this line of thinking is incorrect and
stresses the significance of working with a variety of viewpoints to be innovative and
successful.

3. What type of attention-grabber does the speaker use? How effective is it? How does
the speaker create the need for the information?
The speaker uses a combination of storytelling, a rhetorical question, and logical reasoning to
grab the audience's attention. By presenting a scenario and challenging conventional wisdom
with a "trick question," the speaker engages the audience and prompts them to reconsider
their assumptions about problem-solving and teamwork. Additionally, the speaker uses vivid
language and references brain science to underscore the psychological dynamics at play,
further compelling the audience to pay attention and reflect on the importance of cognitive
diversity.
4. What are your reactions to this presentation (benefits and objections)?
a) Benefits:
● The speech does a good job of highlighting how crucial cognitive variety is to
promoting creativity and group intelligence.
● It alleviates popular myths and offers convincing data and logic to back up the case
for diversity in teams that solve problems.
b) Objections:
● While there is an idea to the argument that cognitive variety is valuable, there is also a
chance that it may cause disagreements and difficulties with teamwork and
communication.
● Fostering cognitive diversity in industries could bring up practical implementation
issues, especially in settings or industries where homogeneity is profoundly ingrained.

from a misunderstanding of millennials' distinct challenges and upbringing,
emphasizing the crucial need for understanding and support.

2. What main points does the presentation develop? State them in complete
sentences in parallel form.
- People often unfairly criticize millennials, labeling them as entitled, narcissistic, and
lazy.

experienced during their upbringing.
- As they enter the workforce, a reality check hits many millennials, leading to
struggles with feelings of insignificance and a perceived lack of impact.

building their confidence, teaching them patience, and aiding in the development of
crucial social skills and coping mechanisms.

3. What type of attention-grabber does the speaker use? How effective is it? How
does the speaker create the need for the information?
The speaker uses an interesting question as an attention-grabber, asking, "Apparently this
young millennial generation is unbeatable?" This question immediately engages the audience
by challenging a common assumption about millennials. The speaker makes us want to know
more by showing the gap between what people think about millennials and the tough
problems they actually face. This urgency makes us want to explore and understand the
challenges they go through.

4. What are your reactions to this presentation (benefits and objections)?

Benefits:
- The presentation tells us about the tough times millennials go through, asking us to
understand and support them.
- It suggests helping them gain confidence, patience, and important life skills.
- The speaker keeps it interesting with relatable stories and examples.
Objections:
- Some might say the presentation makes things too simple for millennials or doesn't
focus enough on personal responsibility.
- Talking about outside influences like parenting could be seen as avoiding
responsibility.
- Also, not everyone agrees with generalizations about the whole millennial group.

1. What is the central idea of this presentation?

The central idea of Robert Waldinger's presentation is that loneliness is a pervasive issue in
society, with roots dating back to the 1950s. Factors contributing to this epidemic include
societal changes such as increased mobility, decreased community involvement, and the rise
of digital technology. Loneliness is not just a subjective feeling but also has significant health
implications, comparable to smoking half a pack of cigarettes a day. However, investing in
relationships with others, even casual encounters, is key to combating loneliness and
promoting well-being. Waldinger emphasizes the importance of seeking out settings and
activities where one feels comfortable around others to foster a sense of belonging and
connection.

2. What main points does the presentation develop? State them in complete
sentences in parallel form.
The main points of the presentation are as follows:
- Loneliness is a growing epidemic in society, characterized by a subjective feeling of being
less connected to others than desired.
- Factors contributing to loneliness include societal changes such as increased mobility,
decreased community involvement, and the impact of digital technology.
- Loneliness has significant health implications, comparable to smoking half a pack of
cigarettes a day, and can lead to rapid brain decline in late life.
- Investing in relationships, even casual encounters, is crucial for combating loneliness and
promoting well-being.
- Lonely individuals can learn social skills and challenge assumptions about not being
wanted by others to alleviate their loneliness.

3. What type of attention-grabber does the speaker use? How effective is it? How
does the speaker create the need for the information?
The speaker uses attention-grabbing statistics and relatable anecdotes to draw the audience
in. By citing research findings that loneliness is as dangerous to health as smoking and
emphasizing the widespread nature of loneliness across different demographics, the
speaker effectively creates a sense of urgency and relevance for the information presented.

4. What are your reactions to this presentation (benefits and objections)?

Reactions to the presentation may vary, but some benefits include raising awareness about
the serious implications of loneliness and providing practical suggestions for combating it.
However, objections may arise regarding the complexity of addressing loneliness at a
societal level and the effectiveness of individual strategies in alleviating it. Overall, the
presentation highlights an important issue and offers insights into potential solutions, but
further discussion and action may be needed to address the root causes of loneliness in
society.

1. What is the central idea of this presentation?

a. The violence in raising cattle
b. Guidelines on how to become a “ conscientious omnivore”

2. What main points does the presentation develop? State them in complete sentences in
parallel form.
a. – The violence in raising cattle causes cattle to suffer pains
- The violence in raising cattle contributes to climate change
- The violence in raising cattle offers workers in this environmental workplace poor working
conditions.
b. - Guidelines on how to become a “ conscientious omnivore” include humanely raising
cattle.
- Guidelines on how to become a “ conscientious omnivore” include using fake meat
products.
- Guidelines on how to become a “ conscientious omnivore” include adopting a vegetarian
lifestyle.

3. What type of attention-grabber does the speaker use? How effective is it? How does
the speaker create the need for the information?
The speaker catches people’s attention by giving cruel truths about Animal Husbandry right
now. Those truths did their roles well to raise people’s perceptions of unethical issues in
Animal Husbandry. Human consumption of meat products is increasing; therefore, the
livestock industry is forced to develop to meet the required supply, which leads to immorality
in this industry. Additionally, when the truths are revealed, many people feel outraged by
human cruelty to those cattle. As a result, there have been many questions about changes to
this issue.

4. What are your reactions to this presentation (benefits and objections)?

In general, this video helps me better understand the livestock industry and its cruelty.
However, this speech is not long enough to delve into the issues mentioned in that video.

Part 2:
Group reflection
The group agrees that the following tips will improve the group presentation. Firstly, the
presentation should include activities, for instance, minigames or quizzes to interact with the
audience. By that, the connection between the presenter and the audience will be stronger.
Secondly, the presentation should have a well-organized structure so that the audience can
follow and understand it better. Thirdly, the PowerPoint slide should have vivid pictures or
video to demonstrate, so that it can impress the audience and they will be more concentrated.
Lastly, the PowerPoint slides should not include so much information as one slide, instead,
they should be divided into many slides and have clear headings.
